Keep Your Candy Cool with Physics

bring science home keep candy coolThe Coolest Candies: Can you keep your chocolate cool with just a little bit of water? Learn about evaporation and give it a try! Image: George Retseck

Key concepts
Water
Heat
Temperature
Water cycle

Introduction
Have you ever wondered how sweating helps keep you cool on a hot summer day? Sweat, which is mostly water, cools us down when it evaporates. When water evaporates, it changes from a liquid to a gas. The gas carries away heat with it, helping to remove heat from your skin.

Not only can evaporation cool down your body, it can also cool down other things, such as chocolate. Heat on a hot summer day can turn your solid candy bar into a gooey, melted mess, but how well can evaporation keep your chocolate from melting?

Background
When water is heated enough, it turns into a gas. You see this when water is boiled. The gas phase of water is called water vapor, or steam, and it is hotter than liquid water. Consequently, as water evaporates, the vapor carries heat away from the water.

Materials
???? Paper towel
???? Scissors
???? Small bowl of room-temperature water
???? Chocolate candies (two of the same kind, in a plastic or foil wrapper)
???? Ruler
???? Desk lamp with adjustable height and a 60-watt (W) lightbulb. If you don't have an adjustable-height lamp, a normal desk lamp and a pile of books can be used.
???? Timer

Preparation
???? Cut the paper towel sheet into strips that are about one and a half inches wide. You will need to cut two strips of paper.
???? A 60-watt lamp can be very hot after it has been on?and even for awhile after it has been turned off. Always be careful when handling something hot.

Procedure
???? Take one paper towel strip and wet it in the bowl of water. Carefully wring it out.
???? Keeping the chocolate candies in their wrappers, wrap one candy in the wet paper towel strip and the other candy in a dry paper towel strip.
???? Put the two candies side by side underneath the lamp. Be careful not to get the dry paper towel strip wet. Adjust the lamp (or place the candies on books if the lamp is not adjustable) so that the lightbulb is only one to two inches away from the candy, and evenly distanced from both candies.
???? Turn on the lamp light and leave it lit for 10 minutes.
???? After 10 minutes turn the lamp off, remove the paper towel strips from the candies and carefully unwrap them.
???? For each candy, try to flatten the wrappers around the candy, if possible, to more easily inspect the entire candy and the wrapper. How melted does the candy that was in the wet paper towel strip look compared with the one in the dry strip? Are there larger areas melted on one candy compared with the other? Is there more melted chocolate on one wrapper than the other?
???? Extra: You can repeat this procedure using thermometers to determine the starting temperature of each candy before putting them underneath the lamp, and the final temperature of each candy after it has been under the lamp for 10 minutes.
???? Extra: A gust of wind or a fan can feel very refreshing when you are sweating on a hot day. Is it refreshing for the chocolate candies as well? You can repeat this procedure to see how circulating air affects the candies by having a fan blow over them while they are under the lamp for 10 minutes?or fanning them yourself with a sturdy piece of paper. Does a fan affect how the candies melt? Does it affect their final temperatures?

Nokia announces its Drive navigation, Mix Radio, and ESPN Sports Hub cloud services for WP7

Fancy some turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation, cloud based music or sports highlights on your brand new Nokia smartphone? You don't need an app for that: the Lumia 800 is now the only Windows Phone with full navigation built-in. Nokia announced its Drive navigation, which has a look and feel that should be comfortable with users of its former Ovi Maps suite. It also looks to have similar functionality, enabling the download of maps so that you can find your way into offline areas (see gallery, below).

There's also exclusive Music and ESPN Sports Hub apps. The former features Mix Radio, a service that streams "locally relevant music" across hundreds of channels. The latter, meanwhile, allows sports fans to check up on stats, scores and news, and to pin their favorite teams or leagues to the start screen. All told, the company is promising a "uniquely Nokia" experience -- guess their slick hardware won't be the only way they break out of the WP7 pack. Check out a video demo of the navigation embedded after the break.

Amar Toor and James Trew contributed to this report.

Panetta: No decision yet on US-Libya military ties

(AP) ? U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta declined Tuesday to say whether the Obama administration intends to seek military ties with Libya's new government, amid uncertainty about Islamist influences there after the demise of strongman Moammar Gadhafi.

Asked at a news conference in Tokyo whether Libya should be a U.S. military partner and what such a relationship would entail, Panetta said the U.S. would take its lead from NATO, whose monthslong air campaign helped Libyan rebels oust and eventually kill Gadhafi.

Panetta offered no direct clues to the administration's inclinations on establishing military-to-military relations with the North African nation.

"A lot of that at this point still rests with NATO," Panetta said, adding that the U.S.-led alliance was discussing when to end its Libya mission. He added that he understood some Libya leaders had called for NATO to continue its mission "during this interim as they try to establish some new governance."

"So I guess what I would do at this point is leave the decision as to future security involvement in the hands of NATO and then beyond that, that will give us a basis on which to determine whether there is an additional role," he said.

He said immediate U.S. concerns in Libya are focused on the possibility of providing medical assistance to Libya's wounded and preventing weapons from falling into the wrong hands. Of particular concern are anti-aircraft weapons.

Questions also persist about the nature of the new Libya and the degree of Islamist influence in a government now led by National Transitional Council leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, who said Sunday that Islamic Sharia law would be the main source of legislation, that laws contradicting its tenets would be nullified, and that polygamy would be legalized.

Libya is a deeply conservative Muslim nation. Islamists were heavily repressed under Gadhafi and are eager to have their say, raising the prospect of a battle for influence between hard-line and moderate Muslims.

During the rebel uprising, the U.S. military was a key participant in the NATO air campaign. But Washington chose not to provide training for the rebels or supply them with weapons. Some in Washington have questioned the extent of their commitment to democracy.

At his news conference with Japanese Defense Minister Yasuo Ichikawa, Panetta also expressed satisfaction with Japan's efforts to end a stalemate over the relocation of U.S. Marines on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa.

Panetta, on his first visit to Asia as Pentagon chief, is to travel to South Korea on Wednesday to meet with government leaders and talk to U.S. troops.

Android Quick App: Wind-up Knight

Wind-up Knight

Stop what you're doing and download Wind-up Knight for Android. Wait. Read this first. Then stop what you're doing and download Wind-up Knight, which has been gaining kudos and buzz since its initial release last week.

Wind-up Knight is a side-scroller that's reminscient of Super Mario Brothers -- you'll be collecting coins while dispatching creatures, all in the name of saving a princess. But it's not a mere two-dimensional side-scroller -- this sucker's got depth. And the graphics, while simple, also don't overpower the gameplay, a problem we've seen in other games. The controls are simple as well. Your character runs on his own (hint: You'll need to go left sometimes), and you're left iwth jumping and rolling and attacking.

Wind-up Knight is a free game, but you'll need to collect weapons and armor along the way. And you can upgrade as quickly as you want, thanks to in-app purchasing. Want a bad-ass sword without having to save up currency? You can buy 10,000 Rote for a $9.99US. Of course, that's the trick, right? You'll likely end up spending far more within the game than you would if you paid $1.99, or $2.99 -- heck, we'd probably easily go $5 for Wind-up Knight -- up front. But on the other hand, with 50 levels and great gameplay, you're getting your money's worth.

One downside of all that in-app purchasing, though, is that you can't switch devices. If you upgrade on a tablet, you won't have those weapons and armor on a phone, unless you repurchase them. (Hopefully Google does something about that at some point.

Anyhoo, we've distracted you long enough. Hit up the download links and check out our hands-on video after the break.

Update: Ooo. So after a few levels, you have the one-time option to upgrade to the full version at a discounted $3.99. We're all for in-app purchases, but the upselling is starting to be a bit much here.

(AP) ? A top bank lobbyist insisted Saturday that banks and the eurozone are far from reaching a deal to cut Greece's debt, despite claims by eurozone finance ministers that they will ask banks to take steeper losses on their Greek bonds.

Although the ministers did not say how much of a cut they are aiming for, a report from Greece's international debt inspectors suggested that the value of Greece's bonds may have to be slashed as much as 60 percent to get the country solvent enough to repay its debt.

The ministers on Saturday sent their chief negotiator, Vittorio Grilli, to re-start discussions with banks and other private investors on a new deal for Greece.

However, Charles Dallara, the managing director of the Institute of International Finance, who has been leading the negotiations for the banks, said in an interview with The Associated Press that an agreement remained elusive.

"We're nowhere near a deal," he said.

Banks in July agreed to accept losses of about 21 percent on their Greek bonds. However, eurozone leaders have since reopened the deal and Greece's international debt inspectors ? the so-called troika of the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund ? say Greece's economic situation has deteriorated dramatically since the summer.

In a report Friday, the inspectors said that under the July deal, Greece would need an extra euro252 billion ($347 billion) in loans from the eurozone and the IMF ? on top of the euro110 billion ($152 billion) it has been relying on to pay bills since May 2010.

But Dallara said new plans to slash Greece debt would still leave the country as "a ward of Europe" for years.

He declined to say how much in losses banks would be willing to accept, saying only "we would be open to an approach that involves additional efforts from everyone."

Dallara was in Brussels, where eurozone finance ministers have been meeting for two days of talks.

The eurozone has been working to reach a voluntary agreement with banks, rather than forcing losses onto the lenders, because that could avoid triggering billions of euros on payout for bond insurance and could destabilize markets even further. However, in recent weeks some officials have no longer insisted that the deal remain voluntary.

Earlier Saturday, a European official said the EU was on track to agree on forcing banks to raise just over euro100 billion ($140 billion) to ensure they have enough cushion to weather further losses on their Greek bonds as well as market turmoil.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions the deal was supposed to be unveiled by EU leaders at their summit Sunday.

"We have made real progress and have come to important decisions on strengthening European banks," George Osborne, Britain's chancellor of the exchequer, said as he left Saturday's meeting. Osborne did not say what the decision was.

Strengthening banks and slashing Greece's debts are critical to solving Europe's crisis, which is now threatening to engulf larger economies like Italy and Spain and is blamed for dampening growth across Europe and even the world.

The euro100 billion figure is likely to disappoint some analysts, although it was above recent press reports. A report by the International Monetary Fund has called for up to euro200 billion ($280 billion) to be poured into banks.

The new rules would force systemically important banks to raise their core capital ratios to 9 percent, compared with just 5 percent to 6 percent they needed to pass EU stress tests this summer. The ratio measures the amount of capital banks hold compared to their risky assets.

Despite that significant progress, agreement on arguably the most important measure has remained elusive to eurozone leaders: boosting the firepower of the currency union's euro440 billion ($600 billion) bailout fund to keep the crisis from spreading.

Increasing the effectiveness of the fund ? called the European Financial Stability Facility ? is meant to help prevent larger economies like Italy and Spain from being unable to afford to borrow money from markets. That's exactly what happened to Greece, Portugal and Ireland and why those three EU countries needed bailouts.

Germany and France still disagree over how to do that and failed to make much progress on that front Friday night. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy are meeting Saturday evening in the hopes of moving toward a deal.

Why the world will end (again) on Friday

The world is about to end. Again.

Oct. 21 is the next in a long line of supposed apocalypses, stretching back thousands of years. This time, the prophet of doom is Harold Camping, a radio preacher who received international media attention in May when he predicted that Judgment Day would fall on May 21, followed by months of torment on Earth and an end to everything in autumn. ?

Judgment Day didn't bring the promised earthquakes and Rapture, but Camping now says May 21 marked a spiritual Judgment Day and that the world will still end "quietly" on Friday.

It may seem odd that Camping's faith remains strong, but apocalypse experts say that doomsday prophets have often built their entire lives around their end-of-the-world views, and that worldview is hard to shake. For an elderly preacher like Camping, who suffered a stroke in June, apocalypse beliefs may also reflect his struggle with his own mortality.

"I would not be surprised to discover that Mr. Camping sees this prediction as his life's work, the culmination of decades of intensive Bible study, filtered through the sieve of faith," said Lorenzo DiTommaso, a professor of religion at Concordia University in Montreal. "If this is correct, then perhaps he sees in the world a reflection of his self."

The appeal of the end
Doomsday predictions, whether secular or religious, often attract those who feel the world is unsalvageable. Sometimes the world-ending catastrophe is nuclear winter; sometimes it?s the Mayan apocalypse. But religious doomsday groups often draw on mainstream faith, said Stephen Kent, a sociologist at the University of Alberta.

"Almost all apocalyptic beliefs show Christian influence," Kent told LiveScience.

That's because a central tenant of the faith is that Jesus will return ? although many mainstream Christians point to the Bible verse Matthew 24:36 to condemn doomsday prophets such as Camping. That verse says that no one knows the day or hour of the end, "not even the angels in heaven."

Those who try to predict when doomsday will occur often focus on the world's sin. Camping, for example, has said that God left all churches in 1988, leaving Satan to rule those institutions. Famous 1800s doomsday prophet William Miller, who predicted that the end would come on Oct. 22, 1844, was "disillusioned with humanity," Kent said. [Read: Oops! 11 Failed Doomsday Predictions ]

"He read a considerable amount of history and came to see humans as brutes," Kent said.

With this worldview, the end of the world is a welcome way to wipe Earth clean.

"Despite fire, death and destruction, the god of apocalypticism is a god of order, not chaos," DiTommaso told LiveScience in May. "That's the reassurance."

The personal is the prophetic
An individual's psychology and environment may contribute to the apocalyptic worldview. Followers often live and socialize in small groups where outside opinions aren't heard, DiTommaso said. This "social encapsulation" keeps faith-shaking questions at bay.

Camping and his followers are also operating from a worldview that holds that the Bible and its prophecies cannot be wrong, DiTommaso told LiveScience.

"But human ego doesn't easily admit to error, either," he added. That can lead to creative re-interpretations of the prophecies as believers try to explain what went wrong. After Miller's doomsday prophecy failed in 1844, for example, one group of followers concluded that Oct. 22 had actually been the date when Jesus Christ entered a holy sanctuary in heaven in preparation for returning to Earth.?

Miller and Camping may share another characteristic: a fear of death. Camping is 90 and is recovering at home from his stroke, according to the Family Radio website. Miller, Kent said, was "deeply troubled" by death. It's possible Camping feels the same way.

"He insists no person can know who God saves and who God damns, but the implication very clearly is that he is among the saved," Kent said. "With that implication, belief in the Rapture means that Mr. Camping would escape the fate that befalls all human beings, which is death."

Report: Turkey launches incursion into Iraq (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Turkish soldiers, air force bombers and helicopter gunships reportedly launched an incursion into Iraq on Wednesday, hours after Kurdish rebels killed 26 soldiers and wounded 22 others in multiple attacks along the border.

Turkish authorities did not immediately confirm the incursion but the chief of the military as well as interior and defense ministers rushed to the border area while Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan canceled a visit to Kazakhstan.

NTV television, without citing sources, said Turkish troops penetrated as deep as 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) and helicopters were ferrying commandos across the border in what appeared to be a cross-border offensive limited in scope for now. Turkey last staged a major ground offensive against Iraq in early 2008.

Kurdish rebel group the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, said clashes were taking place in two separate areas close to the mountainous Iraqi-Turkish border.

"We have been clashing with the Turkish forces in two areas since around 3 a.m. today," Dostdar Hamo, a spokesman for the rebel group, said by telephone.

The incursion came hours after the rebels, who are fighting for autonomy in Turkey's southeast, staged simultaneous attacks on military outposts and police stations near the border towns of Cukurca and Yuksekova early Wednesday.

The attacks left 26 soldiers dead and 22 others wounded, the Interior Ministry announced. It was the deadliest Kurdish rebel attack since 1992, according to a tally by NTV television.

Turkish warplanes and artillery units, positioned just inside Turkey, struck Kurdish rebel bases across the border in response, NTV said. Turkey last week pressured Iraq to move to eradicate the rebel bases in northern Iraq, saying its "patience is running out" in the face of rebel attacks directed at Turkey from Iraqi soil.

"No one should forget that those who make us suffer this pain will be made to suffer even stronger," President Abdullah Gul told reporters Wednesday. "They will see that the vengeance for these attacks will be immense."

Around 100 Kurdish rebels were believed to have participated in the attacks, according to the state-run TRT television. The rebels fled to northern Iraq after the attacks as the military shelled their escape routes, NTV said.

The rebels have lately intensified their attacks in the country's Kurdish-dominated southeast, killing dozens of members of the country's security force and at least 18 civilians since mid-July.

On Tuesday, a roadside bomb blast killed five policemen and three civilians, including a 4-year-old girl.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people since 1984 as Kurdish politicians pushed for greater cultural and political rights for Kurds, who make up around 20 percent of Turkey's 74 million people, such as the right to education in the mother tongue ? a demand that the Turkish government fears could deepen the ethnic divide in the country.

The government has taken steps toward wider Kurdish-language education by allowing Kurdish-language institutes and private Kurdish courses as well as Kurdish television broadcasts. But it won't permit lower-level education in Kurdish.

The European Union, which Turkey is striving to join, has pushed the Turkish government to grant more rights to the Kurds. But EU countries also have urged Kurdish lawmakers to distance themselves from the rebel group, which is considered a terrorist group by the U.S. and the EU.

Google Ventures Takes A Moneyball Approach To Investing: It's All ...

Today at Web 2.0, John Batelle sat down with Bill Maris and Graham Spencer of Google Ventures for a quick peak inside Google?s venture arm. For those unfamiliar, Google Ventures? team of 43 invests up to $200 million a year and in 2011 will make upwards of 100 investments. The value proposition of Google?s venture wing is that, according to Maris, it?s highly focused on engagement with the startups they?re investing in, and, of course, partnerships and Google resources are always close at hand. While Google Ventures doesn?t invest specifically to further Google Inc?s products or development projects, the team consists primarily of former Googlers ? not to mention former entrepreneurs, investors, and scientists.

But what?s probably most interesting about the venture firm is that it?s really taking a Moneyball approach to investing in startups. What does this mean? Moneyball, the book (and now film) that looks at the changing role of statistics in major league baseball and how clubhouses utilize their data to determine the value of players. Billy Beane, the book?s protagonist, was able to build an Oakland Athletics team of undervalued (and many would say questionable) players for cheap and take that team all the way to the playoffs.

Google Ventures, too, is all about the data. Beyond being able to help teams solve their UX, search, and scaling issues, the team takes hopes to mix both qualitative and quantitative data to put together the best approach to deciding in which startups to invest. According to Maris and Spencer, Google Ventures applies data tools and metrics to their prospective investments to decide which opportunities make the most sense.

Naturally, as the team at Google Ventures itself (and their mothership as well) is home a full roster of computer scientists, engineers, machine learning specialists, and more, there?s really no surprise that Google Ventures would be applying a data frame to the problem of what spaces and areas are most ripe for investment.

They take investment heuristics and the many qualitative rules of thumb investors use to make their decisions, and apply software they?ve built themselves to build models, test theories, etc. So along with being able to take advantage of Google-based analytics, search query-type knowledge, and so on.

The venture partners cited DNAnexus as one of the companies they?ve invested in most recently that both reflects their data-based approach as well as their strategic effort to find startups that are designing solutions to big, global problems. DNAnexus is building a backend system to help researchers understand genomic data sets, making that reseaerch available to everybody, not just for Google ? even though Google Inc has partnered with the company to host this huge, totally anonymized, government database.

The startup is a good example, the venture partners said, of the type of startup they?re looking to invest in, whereupon they listed a few more examples, including Climate Corp (weather insurance for farmers), and Adimab, an antibody discovery platform.

For more on Google Ventures? portfolio, check ?em out here.

Google Ventures was founded in March 2009. Google Ventures is broadly interested in startups in industries including consumer Internet, software, hardware, clean-tech, bio-tech, health care and others. They invest amounts ranging from seed funding to tens of millions of dollars, depending on the stage of the opportunity and the company?s need for capital.

Razr's Back, but Can It Cut the Competition? (NewsFactor)

The Razr is back, and better than ever.

Electronics manufacturing giant Motorola Mobility, in the process of being acquired by Google, is bringing back its iconic branded phone, a pre-iPhone consumer favorite, but this time as an Android-powered, 4G LTE smartphone available via Verizon Wireless. The original Razr, first sold in 2004, was an ultra-thin flip phone.

Newest Verizon LTE Phone

Motorola unveiled the Droid Razr on Tuesday at an event in New York City along with a a sporty MP3 player (with Bluetooth headset and FM radio) and a new Xoom tablet, with Android 4, code-named Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Droid Razr will be available in November for $299.99 with a two-year voice and data contract. Like its predecessor, it is extremely thin, as the name implies, in this case 7.1 millimeters.

It will be the fifth smartphone device to run on Verizon's long-term evolution, 4G network and the third device to carry Verizon's premium Droid designation, along with Samsung's Charge and Motorola's Bionic.

The Razr runs Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), has a full one gigabyte of RAM, sports an 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p HD video capture and image stabilization, a front-facing HD camera for video chat over 4G LTE, 3G or Wi-Fi. The storage capacity is 32 GB, including a pre-installed 16 GB micro-SD card.

The Razr is also tough and extra secure: It has water repellent nano-coating for protection against "everyday spills" (no promises about immersion) and?remote wipe, pin lock and government-grade encryption for e-mail, calendar and contacts. Preloaded Quickoffice allows creation and editing of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.

Verizon is marketing the Razr as "Droid Strong, Razr Sharp."

"Droid Razr by Motorola combines style, performance and the power of Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network into one innovative device," said Marni Walden, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. "These are two iconic brands that separately symbolize the best technology available today."

Might Not Cut It

But analysts say bringing back the Razr can, well, cut both ways.

"It could go in two directions," said analyst Alex Spektor of Strategy Analytics. "It might be associated with the old technology, the clamshell phones, which might be to Motorola's disservice."

He cited the association with Microsoft's older Windows Mobile operating system that might stand in the way of the company's newer Windows Phone 7 devices as an example. But Spektor added "there's something to be said for the value of a sub-brand associated with a vendor, such as Apple's iPhone, Sony Ericsson's Xperia and Samsung's Galaxy."

Spektor acknowledged that Verizon and Motorola have likely done extensive market research and found that the brand has a positive association, but cautioned: "It's difficult to predict from panels. The company with arguably the most success in mobile today, Apple, doesn't do a whole lot of consumer research: They dictate how the market goes."

Cards within win of pennant, beat Brewers 7-1 (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? Tony La Russa called up some more bullpen magic for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Yet another round of spotless relief has a team that squeaked into the postseason on the final day one victory away from the World Series. Not bad for a team that's on its fifth closer, and Jason Motte remains unofficial in that capacity.

"We're just trying to win," Matt Holliday said after the Cardinals beat Milwaukee 7-1 on Friday night to take a 3-2 lead in the NL championship series. "He's (La Russa's) just trying to do whatever he can to win. If the spot calls for it, our bullpen's been incredible. They're really fit into roles and it's been fun to watch."

The Brewers helped out with four errors, one more than their high in the regular season, leading to three unearned runs against Zack Greinke (1-1).

"Obviously, we didn't make the plays behind him," said third baseman Jerry Hairston Jr., whose fielding error permitted two runs to score in the second. "We're going back home and hopefully we play great at home like we have the whole year."

The Cardinals survived another short start by Jaime Garcia, who worked four scoreless innings but then got only two more outs. Garcia gave up two homers in the Brewers' six-run fifth in Game 1, and that was on the manager's mind.

"Well, there's a lot of conversation about Game 1 and how quickly they put some runs on the board," La Russa said. "We just notice. I'm not sure exactly what it is, maybe it's just a long season for a young guy."

Yadier Molina and Matt Holliday had three hits each for St. Louis, which ended an 0-for-15 slump with runners in scoring position on Molina's RBI double in the second and added two more when Garcia's grounder scooted through Hairston's legs.

Milwaukee's infield nearly had a cycle of errors, with second baseman Rickie Weeks and shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt also committing miscues along with reliever Marco Estrada. Weeks has four errors in the postseason.

"It's definitely not focus," manager Ron Roenicke said. "These games, we do have them once in a while. We had one a couple days ago. I'm confident we'll play a good game on Sunday."

The Cardinals won for the 14th straight time on getaway day, a run that began Aug. 7 in Florida. Players got another chance to chant "Happy Flight! Happy Flight!"

St. Louis can wrap up the series and its 18th NL pennant Sunday in Milwaukee. Edwin Jackson will start for the Cardinals against Shaun Marcum in a rematch of Game 2, won by St. Louis 12-3.

"I haven't really analyzed it, I try and stay in the moment, bro," Brewers slugger Prince Fielder said. "I'm not really looking back or forward, just trying to stay game to game. We have to win both of them but we've got to win first."

The NL winner hosts the World Series opener against Detroit or Texas on Wednesday night.

"We're having a good series right now and, hopefully, we can do it for one more game," Molina said.

Milwaukee had not made more than three errors in a game during the regular season, but the Brewers' sloppiness reached a near-record level. Milwaukee was one shy of the LCS record for errors in a game, shared by the 1974 Los Angeles Dodgers and 1976 New York Yankees, according to STATS LLC.

La Russa had a quick hook once again. Garcia opened with four scoreless innings, then allowed three hits and a sacrifice in a span of four at-bats in the fifth, with Corey Hart singling in a run. With two and on and two outs, Octavio Dotel struck out Ryan Braun.

Garcia said he hadn't been worried about facing Braun.

"I'm not afraid of anybody in the game," Garcia said. "If I think like that I wouldn't be pitching here."

But he couldn't argue with La Russa's results.

"He's been doing this for so long and he's been so successful and he's got his reasons," Garcia said. "Today, it worked out really good for us."

Dotel (1-0) struck out two in 1 1-3 hitless innings and four relievers allowed only two hits over 4 1-3 innings. Motte got four outs for his second save of the series.

Cardinals relievers are 2-0 with a 1.66 ERA in 22 2-3 innings, holding batters to a .164 average. The starters are 1-2 with a 6.04 ERA, and have allowed a .340 average.

Only one St. Louis starter has lasted long enough to qualify for a victory, with Chris Carpenter working five innings in Game 3. The previous team to have a starter not pitch into the sixth in the first five games of a postseason series was the 1984 San Diego Padres in the World Series, according to STATS.

With Milwaukee down 5-1 and trying to rally with two on in the eighth, Marc Rzepczynski struck out Prince Fielder. Fielder is 0 for 4 with four strikeouts and two walks against Rzepczynski.

"With two strikes I said I'm just going to bounce at it and see if he swing," Rzepczynski said. "And today, he did."

Greinke left pitches over the plate in some key spots and allowed five runs ? just two earned ? and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings with no strikeouts and two walks.

"I made several mistakes that ended up costing us and they pitched a good game," Greinke said. "I definitely could have done better and made it a better game."

Hart had three hits, breaking out from a 1 for 12 start to the series.

Hairston saved at least one run at third base with a spectacular diving catch to his left on Nick Punto's low liner for the second out. But when he botched Garcia's easy grounder, St. Louis was up 3-0. Garcia's RBI groundout made it 4-0 in he fourth, the first RBI by a Cardinals pitcher in the postseason since Jeff Suppan homered in the 2006 NLCS against the Mets.

Albert Pujols had an RBI single in the sixth to chase Greinke.

NOTES: Braun doubled in the first and has reached base safely in the opening inning of nine straight games, going 7 for 7 with a walk and hit by pitch. He has 22 hits in the postseason, matching the franchise record by Paul Molitor and Robin Yount. ... Chuck Berry, a St. Louis musical icon, performed the national anthem with daughter Ingrid. Wearing his trademark sailor's cap and a No. 84 Cardinals jersey (his age), Berry mostly watched and threw in occasional harmony.

(AP) ? Thousands of demonstrators protesting corporate greed filled Times Square on Saturday night, mixing with gawkers, Broadway showgoers, tourists and police to create a chaotic scene in the midst of Manhattan.

"Banks got bailed out, we got sold out!" protesters chanted from within police barricades. Police, some in riot gear and mounted on horses, tried to push them out of the square and onto the sidewalks in an attempt to funnel the crowds away.

Sandy Peterson, of Utah, who was in Times Square after seeing "The Book of Mormon" musical on Broadway, got caught up in the disorder.

"We're getting out of here before this gets ugly," she said.

The Occupy Wall Street demonstrators had marched north through Manhattan from Washington Square Park earlier in the afternoon. Once in Times Square, they held a rally for several hours before dispersing. Over the course of the day, more than 70 people were arrested.

Earlier in the day, demonstrators from the Occupy Wall Street encampment in New York City paraded to a Chase bank branch, banging drums, blowing horns and carrying signs decrying corporate greed. Marchers throughout the country emulated them in protests that ranged from about 50 people in Jackson, Mississippi, to about 2,000 in the larger city of Pittsburgh.

"Banks got bailed out. We got sold out," the crowd of as many as 1,000 in Manhattan chanted. A few protesters went inside the bank to close their accounts, but the group didn't stop other customers from getting inside or seek to blockade the business.

Police told the marchers to stay on the sidewalk, and the demonstration appeared to be fairly orderly as it wound through downtown streets.

Later, police arrested 24 people at a Citibank branch near Manhattan's Washington Square Park. Most were detained for trespassing after they ignored a request by the bank to leave, police said.

Overseas, violence broke out in Rome, where police fired tear gas and water cannons at some protesters who broke away from the main demonstration, smashing shop and bank windows, torching cars and hurling bottles. Dozens were injured.

A dozen demonstrators were arrested, the Italian news agency reported. Those arrested came from several Italian cities, especially in the south. Police said they seized clubs and incendiary devices from the protesters.

Tens of thousands nicknamed "the indignant" marched in cities across Europe, as the protests that began in New York linked up with long-running demonstrations against government cost-cutting and failed financial policies in Europe. Protesters also turned out in Australia and Asia.

In Canada, hundreds protested in the heart of Toronto's financial district. Some of the protesters announced plans to camp out indefinitely in St. James Park and protests were also held in other cities across Canada from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Vancouver, British Columbia.

In Mexico City, a few hundred protesters gathered under the towering, stone Revolution Monument to protest "exploitation" by wealthy elites. In the border city of Tijuana, about 100 protesters gathered in the banking district, including many university students protesting against the lack of jobs for graduates.

In the U.S., among the demonstrators in New York withdrawing their money from Chase was Lily Paulina, 29, an organizer with the United Auto Workers union who lives in Brooklyn. She said she was taking her money out because she was upset that JPMorgan Chase was making billions, while its customers struggled with bank fees and home foreclosures.

"Chase bank is making tons of money off of everyone ... while people in the working class are fighting just to keep a living wage in their neighborhood," she said.

"We aren't going to be a part of this system that doesn't work for us," said another demonstrator withdrawing her money, 20-year-old Brooklyn College student Biola Jeje.

Other demonstrations in the city Saturday included an anti-war march to mark the 10th anniversary of the Afghanistan War.

Among the people participating in that march was Sergio Jimenez, 25, who said he quit his job in Texas to come to New York to protest.

"These wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were all based on lies," Jimenez said. "And if we're such an intelligent country, we should figure out other ways to respond to terror, instead of with terror."

Elsewhere in the country, nearly 1,500 gathered Saturday for a march past banks in downtown Orlando. About 50 people met in a park in downtown Jackson, Miss., carrying signs calling for "Health Care Not Warfare."

Some made more considerable commitments to try to get their voices heard. Nearly 200 spent a cold night in tents in Grand Circus Park in Detroit, donning gloves, scarves and heavy coats to keep warm, said Helen Stockton, a 34-year-old certified midwife from Ypsilanti, and plan to remain there "as long as it takes to effect change."

"It's easy to ignore us," Stockton said. Then she referred to the financial institutions, saying, "But we are not going to ignore them. Every shiver in our bones reminds us of why we are here."

Hundreds more converged near the Michigan's Capitol in Lansing with the same message, the Lansing State Journal reported.

Rallies drew young and old, laborers and retirees. In Pittsburgh, marchers also included parents with children in strollers and even a doctor. The peaceful crowd of 1,500 to 2,000 stretched for two or three blocks.

"I see our members losing jobs. People are angry," said Janet Hill, 49, who works for the United Steelworkers, which she said hosted a sign-making event before the march.

Retired teacher Albert Siemsen of Milwaukee said at a demonstration there that he'd grown angry watching school funding get cut at the same time that banks and corporations gained more influence in government. The 81-year-old wants to see tighter Wall Street regulation.

Around him, protesters held signs reading, "Keep your corporate hands off my government," and "Mr. Obama, Tear Down That Wall Street."

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick visited protesters in Boston's Dewey Square for the first time. He said that after walking through the camp, he better understands the range of views and was sympathetic to concerns about unemployment, health care and the influence of money in politics.

And in Denver, about 1,000 people came to a rally in downtown Denver to support the movement.

A spokeswoman for the two-time Oscar winner said on Friday that Swank would give her personal appearance fees to various charitable organizations.

Swank has said she "deeply regrets" taking part in a birthday celebration in the Chechen capital Grozny last week for regional strong Ramzan Kadyrov, who is accused of orchestrating human rights violations.
