The College of Human and Health Sciences Funded PhD studentship in coping interventions for couples living with Prostate Cancer at Swansea University, UK
Study Subject: Coping interventions for couples living with Prostate Cancer
Employer: Swansea University
Level: PhD
Scholarship Description: The College of Human and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-funded PhD studentship titled ?Coping interventions for couples living with Prostate Cancer?. Predictions into 2050 suggest there will be an increase by 40% of people living with cancer as a chronic illness. There is increasing recognition of the importance of cancer rehabilitation services and interventions to improve the lives of people with cancer (NICE 2004). In Wales prostate cancer is the most common cancer effecting men (WCISU). More than three quarters of men diagnosed with prostate cancer now survive beyond 5 years. Between 5%-7% of men with prostate cancer suffer from depression while a substantial minority (14%-38%) report high levels of psychological distress both at the time of diagnosis and treatment and up to five years following treatment. The physical and psychological consequences of prostate cancer and treatment can affect relationships with an intimate partner. Female partners of men with prostate cancer experience rates of depression twice that of women in their local community, and higher than rates reported by their partners.
The overall aim of this PhD studentship study is to gain an understanding of key issues for couples living with prostate cancer. The data gathered will be used to inform the development of a self-help intervention for use with couples living with prostate cancer.
