L.A. voters mostly upbeat as new mayor Eric Garcetti starts his job

Los Angeles voters are upbeat about the city's quality of life as Eric Garcetti prepares to take over as mayor ? even if they remain frustrated by traffic jams, substandard schools, costly housing and the backlog of unrepaired streets, according to a new USC Price/Los Angeles Times poll .

Those long-standing gripes aside, solid majorities said they were satisfied with the city's police, parks, libraries, public transportation, emergency services and healthcare system.

Most were also optimistic that after four years with Garcetti as mayor, Los Angeles will be better off than it is today. The councilman from Silver Lake will hold an inaugural ceremony at City Hall on Sunday and start work as mayor Monday.

Garcetti opens his term with a positive, if undefined, public image: 53% of voters viewed him favorably, 17% unfavorably. The rest offered no opinion.

"Garcetti's still a blank slate with most voters," said pollster Jeff Harrelson of M4 Strategies, the Republican firm on the bipartisan team that conducted the survey for the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy and the Los Angeles Times.

Many know little about the incoming mayor, he said, but "they're willing to give him a chance."

Indeed, at least two-thirds of voters said they were confident in Garcetti's ability to handle crime and transportation. Most also had faith in his capacity to improve schools and create jobs.

Overall, the poll results suggested a significant mood shift from the deep pessimism that took hold statewide and nationally after the 2008 economic crisis. Today's voters were split evenly on whether things in Los Angeles were moving in the right direction or off on the wrong track, but even that represented improvement over state and national poll findings in recent years.

In Los Angeles, the recovery has been slow; the unemployment rate still exceeds 10%. Yet tellingly, job creation ranked not first, but second on voters' priority list for the mayor and City Council over the next few years, just behind improving the school system.

"There is definitely a sense nationwide that things are trending in the right direction, and the worst is behind us," said Amy Levin of Benenson Strategy Group, the Democratic firm on the polling team.

On a quality-of-life scale of 1 to 9, the higher the better, nearly half of the city's voters gave Los Angeles a grade of 7, 8 or 9.

The reasons cited most often were jobs, proximity to family and friends, diversity of the population, entertainment, arts, culture, beaches, parks and the outdoors.

"Angelenos aren't completely satisfied with life in their city, but by and large they're very optimistic and very happy," said poll director Dan Schnur.

Not surprisingly, traffic congestion jumped out as the biggest negative effect on the quality of life, followed by the high cost of housing. Traffic was most irksome to white voters and residents of the Westside, where bumper-to-bumper jams on the 405 Freeway epitomize the downside of life in Los Angeles.

Poll respondent John Jackson, a librarian who lives in Westchester, said in a follow-up interview that he was "very happy" with the quality of life in L.A., especially its cultural attractions. But Jackson, a 31-year-old Democrat, has learned to plan ahead for extra drive time to cope with the chronic slowdowns.

"I've just come to expect traffic is going to be bad," he said.

Voter opinions on other aspects of L.A. life also varied by region and ethnicity. In an era of new rail lines opening across Los Angeles, nearly two-thirds of voters citywide were satisfied with the public transit system. Nearly three-quarters of Latinos were happy with it.

But white voters and Westside residents were less satisfied than others, another sign of their dependence on automobiles and their exasperation over traffic.

The poll showed signs of happiness among voters with the steady drop in crime since the 1990s. Citywide, crime reduction scored low on voters' priority list for the mayor and council members. The poll found that 55% of voters were satisfied with the city's police and crime prevention efforts. But Latinos, African Americans and South L.A. residents, traditionally more vulnerable to crime, were less satisfied than whites.

One source of deep dissatisfaction was street repairs, with two-thirds of voters dissatisfied with the city's performance. White voters were unhappiest about the condition of city streets, while Latinos were less concerned about it. In his campaign advertising, Garcetti promised to "do the basics better, like answering phones, filling potholes and picking up trash."

The high cost of housing was a concern for nearly two-thirds of voters. Black voters were especially unhappy with the availability of affordable housing. On the question of access to hospitals and emergency care, voters citywide were satisfied, but Latinos and African Americans were less so.

By and large, however, Latino voters were more content than others with the quality of life, reflecting an optimism that surfaces regularly in polls. Just over half of Latinos said things in the city were going in the right direction.

For Garcetti, a top challenge will be to get the city's spending in line with its tax and fee collections after years of budget shortfalls. Although most voters were confident in his ability to handle fiscal matters, they had more faith in his capacity to meet crime and transportation challenges, among others.

Given a menu of potential spending cuts, voters' top choice was to reduce city worker salaries and administrative costs, followed by cuts to their health and retirement benefits.

"We're going to go the way of Detroit," said poll respondent Rodrick Su, 43, a computer system administrator who lives in Woodland Hills. The salary and pension obligations approved by city leaders are unrealistic, he said.

"Let's be honest," said Su, a Republican. "And hey ? I'm paying for it. It's been going on for quite a while."

The poll found an ethnic divide on slashing the health and retirement benefits of city workers. Only 7% of Latino voters favored that option, but 29% of whites supported the idea. The least favored choice for all voters was to cut the number of police officers, firefighters or emergency dispatchers.

The USC Price/L.A. Times poll of 500 registered voters was taken Monday through Wednesday. The margin of sampling error for the telephone survey was 4.4 percentage points in either direction for the full sample and wider for subgroups.

Supreme Court petitioned to reimpose California gay marriage ban

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Opponents of gay marriage petitioned the Supreme Court on Saturday to immediately reinstate a 5-year-old ban on same-sex matrimony in California, saying a federal appeals court had acted prematurely in removing the prohibition on gay nuptials.

Supporters of the gay marriage ban, known as Proposition 8, which California voters approved in 2008, asked the high court to overrule a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals order on Friday lifting a stay that had kept same-sex unions outlawed.

Friday's surprise removal of the stay launched a flurry of swiftly arranged weddings by gay and lesbian couples up and down the state following a Supreme Court decision on Wednesday to let stand a 2010 lower-court opinion striking down Prop 8 as unconstitutional.

But opponents said the three-judge panel of the appeals court had jumped the gun in lifting its injunction before a 25-day "reconsideration" period at the Supreme Court had elapsed.

The Arizona-based group Alliance Defending Freedom argued that the 9th Circuit lacked authority to act when it did, and that it violated the terms of its own stay requiring that it remain in place "until final disposition by the Supreme Court."

The alliance asserted that final disposition could not occur before passage of the 25 days the Supreme Court normally gives petitioners to seek a re-hearing, in this case Prop 8 backers who were denied legal standing to appeal the 2010 decision.

But the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which sponsored the federal court challenge to Prop 8, issued a statement insisting that the 9th Circuit acted under its own "broad discretion" to issue its stay in the first place.

"Now that the Supreme Court has decided that the injunction against Proposition 8 must stand, it was entirely appropriate for the 9th circuit to dissolve its stay of that injunction," the alliance said in a statement.

Foundation attorney Ted Boutrous told reporters on a conference call on Friday that the 9th Circuit's move was hardly unprecedented and that appeals courts have taken similar actions in "much more boring cases than this" without drawing much notice.

Prop 8 supporters, he said, "should hang it up and quit trying to stop people from getting married."

The emergency petition seeking to bring gay marriages to a halt came as dozens of same-sex couples lined up at San Francisco City Hall for a second straight day since the appeals court lifted its stay against the 2010 decision by U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker barring further enforcement of Prop 8.

Wall Street: turbulent quarter. Main Street: sleepy growth.

Wall Street's second-quarter swoon began when the Federal Reserve began to hint that it would pare back its bond-buying program sooner rather than later. Bonds tumbled and gold endured its worst quarter since at least 1968. But in the broader economy, the economic indicators point to continued growth, albeit sluggish.

Pedestrians walk in and out of the Walgreens flagship store in the Empire State Building in New York last month. Despite a quarter of volatility on Wall Street, consumer sentiment rose this week, capping a week of good economic news for the US.

The last trading day of the second quarter ended with stocks falling and gold rallying, one last hurrah for a volatile three months that saw investor sentiment sway dramatically and gold notch its biggest decline in at least 45 years.

For all the drama on Wall Street, however, the economy itself keeps sending signals of growth that's sluggish, even boring, but also steady. This week's economic reports fit into that picture of modest growth.?

Once the haven for investors seeking safety from uncertain markets, gold has accelerated its long descent. From its 2011 high, the the glittery metal?has lost about a third of its value, with more than half of that loss coming in the past three months. On Friday, gold rallied nearly 2 percent to close at $1,232.30 an ounce in New York, still far below its $1,900 high set in 2011. By contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 114 points, or 0.76 percent, to close below the 15000 mark.?

Much of the volatility has come in the wake of Federal Reserve statements suggesting that the US central bank would being to pare back its purchase of
Treasury securities, which have kept interest rates so low. Since May, bond rates have surged and prices (which move in the inverse direction) have tumbled. Mortgage rates, too, have surged about half a percentage point.

But none of these developments have stopped the broader economy's positive trajectory. This week's economic reports delivered upbeat signals:?

Consumers are feeling good: Americans continue to feel better and better about the direction of the economy. The Conference Board?s index of US consumer confidence rose to 81.4 in June, a post-recession high and well above the consensus prediction of 75. According to the index, consumers were increasingly hopeful about the labor market, and the proportion of respondents planning to buy a home or a car within the next six months ticked higher.

ITC judge rules against InterDigital in first round of 3G patent case (update)

After two long years, the International Trade Commission has finally come to a decision in favor of Huawei, Nokia and ZTE in a 3G patent case brought by InterDigital in 2011. According to an ITC judge, the three phone manufacturers did not violate the seven InterDigital-owned patents that covers various WCDMA and CDMA2000 technologies used to make their devices. InterDigital even went so far as to request the ban of US sales of these devices pending a decision. The Philadelphia-based company filed a similar complaint against LG, which chose a settlement instead of going through the courts but it argued it had a right to arbitration based on a previous licensing agreement and was taken out of the case (see update below). Still, this is just a preliminary ruling; the final decision of the case is expected in October.

Update: The story initially said LG chose a settlement instead of going through the courts, which is incorrect. We learned from InterDigital that while LG was in the original case, the ITC took the Korean company out once LG said it had a right to arbitration. However, the Court of Appeals of the Federal Circuit ruled earlier in June that the ITC has made a mistake in excluding LG. So, LG could still face the initial charges brought to it by InterDigital.

Obama: No wheeling or dealing to extradite Snowden

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? The United States won't be scrambling military jets or engaging in high-level diplomatic bartering to get National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden extradited to the U.S., President Barack Obama said Thursday.

Dismissing him as "a 29-year-old hacker," Obama sought to downplay the international chase for Snowden, lowering the temperature of an issue that has already raised tensions between the U.S. and uneasy partners Russia and China.

Obama said the damage to U.S. national security has already been done and his top focus now is making sure it can't happen again.

"I'm not going to have one case with a suspect who we're trying to extradite suddenly be elevated to the point where I've got to start doing wheeling and dealing and trading on a whole host of other issues, simply to get a guy extradited so he can face the justice system," Obama said at a joint news conference with Senegal's President Macky Sall.

Snowden turned 30 last week. He was working as a government contractor with security clearance when he seized the NSA documents.

Snowden's intercontinental efforts to shirk U.S. authorities ? taking him from a hotel hide-out in Hong Kong to an airport transit zone in Moscow, where he's believed to be holed up ? has already undercut Obama's efforts to strengthen ties with China and threatened to worsen tensions with Russia just as Obama is seeking Moscow's cooperation on Syria. At the same time, Snowden's attempts to seek asylum from Ecuador and other nations have underscored Obama's limited sway in a number of foreign capitals.

Obama said he hadn't personally called either Russian President Vladimir Putin or Chinese President Xi Jinping to request their cooperation.

"I shouldn't have to," he declared.

Obama said such matters are routinely dealt with at a law-enforcement level, calling Snowden's extradition "not exceptional from a legal perspective." He said the U.S. has a wide-ranging economic relationship with China that shouldn't be dwarfed by the hunt for one fugitive, and that the U.S. has had "useful conversations" with Moscow over efforts to return Snowden to the U.S. Putin has called Snowden a "free man" and has refused to turn him over to Washington.

"My continued expectation is that Russia or other countries that have talked about potentially providing Mr. Snowden asylum recognize that they are a part of an international community and they should be abiding by international law," Obama said, noting that the U.S. doesn't have a formal extradition treaty with Russia.

"I get why it's a fascinating story," Obama added. "I'm sure there will be a made-for-TV movie somewhere down the line."

Snowden has acknowledged seizing highly classified documents about U.S. surveillance programs that collect vast amounts of U.S. phone and Internet records. He shared the information with The Guardian and Washington Post newspapers. He also told the South China Morning Post that the NSA hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal text message data.

The Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, has said Snowden still has perhaps more than 200 sensitive documents. But Obama's deputy national security adviser, Ben Rhodes, said he doesn't know with certainty how much more classified information Snowden possesses.

"That's something we're actively seeking to determine," Rhodes said.

The White House has said Hong Kong's refusal to detain Snowden has "unquestionably" hurt U.S. relations with China. After Hong Kong's government claimed it had to allow Snowden to flee because the U.S. got Snowden's middle name wrong in documents requesting his arrest, Obama's Justice Department said the U.S. didn't buy that excuse, calling it "a pretext for not acting."

The Hong Kong government had also previously mentioned that it asked the U.S. for more information on NSA's hacking of targets in Hong Kong, suggesting the issue played some role in its decision.

Obama said the fact Snowden walked off with so many secret documents shows significant vulnerabilities at the NSA that must be solved. But Obama said he's also focused on fostering a "healthy effective debate" about the balance between security and privacy in America.

"In terms of U.S. interests, the damage was done with respect to the initial leaks," Obama said.

Obama's comment came on the first full day of a weeklong, three-country trip to Africa, his first major tour of sub-Saharan Africa since he took office in 2009.

Surgery in blind children from India allows them to see for the first time and reveals how vision works in the brain

SCHOOLS FOR THE BLIND in India have helped find children eligible for vision-correcting surgery.

Image: EILEEN HOHMUTH-LEMONICK

In Brief

  • India is home to one of the world's largest populations of blind children, estimated at nearly 400,000. Many of these children receive no education, and girls are often victims of physical and sexual abuse.
  • As a neuroscientist, the author decided to try to help cataract-stricken children and young adults gain the ability to see the world far beyond the age at which developing vision was deemed to be possible.
  • Surgery often proved a success, even for some of those well into their 20s. The procedure also provided the scientists on the author's team with a new understanding of the functioning of the visual system.

My mother used to keep a small blue glass bowl of change near the door of our house in New Delhi. When she went out, she would take a few coins as alms for the poor that one inevitably sees on the city's streets. Given how quickly you can become desensitized to the abundance of human misery in India, I was always impressed by her unwavering adherence to this ritual.

The bowl lay unused for several months as my mother battled cancer. When I went back to India in 2002, a year after her death, I noticed that it was one of the few items of hers that my father had saved. Little did I realize that it was going to change my life.

Devo drummer Alan Myers dies of brain cancer

Alan Myers, the former longtime drummer for the band Devo, best known for "Whip It," has died after a battle with brain cancer. He was 58.

Myers died Monday in Los Angeles, where he lived, Devo spokesman Michael Pilmer said Wednesday.

Myers was the band's drummer from 1976 to 1985 during Devo's heyday. The group was formed in Akron, Ohio, in the early 1970s by Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale, and introduced themselves to the world in 1977 by making a spastic version of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction."

Casale told The Associated Press on Wednesday that without Myers, Devo never would have reached the heights it did, calling him the best drummer he has ever played with.

"We were mostly in basements and garages writing songs. It was Alan that brought everything to life," Casale said. "That was the catalyst where everything clicked."

He called Myers "the human metronome."

"People watching him thought we were using a drum machine," Casale said. "Nobody had ever drummed like that."

Casale described meeting and playing with Myers for the first time in 1976. After their first session ended, Casale ? who had been facing away from Myers ? turned around to see the drummer standing on one leg with his eyes closed, practicing the meditative Chinese martial art of Tai Chi.

"I thought, 'Man, this guy really is Devo. He fits right in,'" Casale said, adding that Tai Chi was one of the drummer's greatest passions. "Some bands would be doing drugs and drinking. Alan would find quiet places backstage and do a full session of Tai Chi."

Devo is short for devolution, the idea that man was devolving into its monkey state.

Trayvon Martin's friend describes final phone call

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? A friend who was on the phone with 17-year-old Trayvon Martin moments before he was fatally shot by George Zimmerman testified that she heard the Miami teen shout, "Get off! Get off!" before his telephone went dead.

Rachel Jeantel, 19, recounted to jurors in Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial how Martin told her he was being followed by a man as he walked through the Retreat at Twin Lakes townhome complex on his way back from a convenience store to the home of his father's fiancee.

Jeantel is considered one of the prosecution's most important witnesses because she was the last person to talk to Martin before his encounter with Zimmerman on Feb. 26, 2012.

She testified that Martin described the man following him as "a creepy-ass cracker" and he thought he had evaded him. But she said a short time later Martin let out a profanity.

Martin said Zimmerman was behind him and she heard Martin ask: "What are you following me for?"

She then heard what sounded like Martin's phone earpiece drop into the grass and she heard him say, "Get off! Get off!" The phone then went dead, she said.

Zimmerman, 29, could get life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder for killing Martin. Zimmerman followed him in his truck and called a police dispatch number before he and the teen got into a fight.

Zimmerman has claimed self-defense, saying he opened fire after the teenager jumped him and began slamming his head against the concrete sidewalk. Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic and has denied that his confrontation with the black teenager had anything to do with race, as Martin's family and its supporters have claimed.

Jeantel's testimony came after two former neighbors of Zimmerman testified Wednesday about hearing howls and shouts for help in the moments before the shooting.

Jayne Surdyka told the court that immediately before the shooting, she heard an aggressive voice and a softer voice exchanging words for several minutes in an area behind her townhome at the Retreat at Twin Lakes.

"It was someone being very aggressive and angry at someone," she said.

During the struggle, she said, she saw a person in dark clothes on top of the other person. Martin was wearing a dark sweatshirt and Zimmerman wore red clothing. Surdyka said she saw the person who was on top get off the body after the shot was fired.

Surdyka said she heard cries for help and then multiple gunshots: "pop, pop, pop." Only one shot was fired in the fatal encounter.

"I truly believe the second yell for help was a yelp," said Surdyka, who later dabbed away tears as prosecutors played her 911 call. "It was excruciating. I really felt it was a boy's voice."

During cross-examination, defense attorney Don West tried to show there was a lapse in what Surdyka saw. Defense attorneys contend Martin was on top of Zimmerman during the struggle, but after the neighborhood watch volunteer fired a shot, Zimmerman got on top of Martin.

West also challenged Surdyka about her belief that the cry for help was a boy's voice, saying she was making an assumption.

The other neighbor, Jeannee Manalo, testified that she believed Zimmerman was on top of Martin, saying he was the bigger of the two based on pictures she saw of Martin on television after the fight. Manalo also described hearing howling, but she couldn't tell who it was coming from, and then a "help sound" a short time later.

Under cross-examination, defense attorney Mark O'Mara asked why Manalo had never mentioned her belief that Zimmerman was on top in previous police interviews. He also got her to concede that her perception of Martin's size was based on five-year-old photos on television that showed a younger and smaller Martin.

Martin's parents have said they believe the cries for help heard by neighbors came from their son, while Zimmerman's father believes the cries belong to his son. Both prosecutors and defense attorneys believe they could show whether Zimmerman or Martin was the aggressor in the encounter. Defense attorneys successfully argued against allowing prosecution experts who claimed the cries belonged to Martin.

Jeantel on Wednesday testified that she believed the cries were Martin's because "Trayvon has kind of a baby voice." The defense attorney challenged that, claiming she was less certain in a previous deposition.

Jeantel, 19, also explained that she had initially lied about her age ? she claimed to be 16 ? to protect her privacy when she was initially contacted by an attorney for Martin's family to give a recorded statement over the telephone about what she knew about the few moments before Martin's encounter with Zimmerman. She was expected to finish her testimony on Thursday.

While being cross-examined, Jeantel had several testy exchange with West, including one moment when she prompted the defense attorney to ask his next question: "You can go. You can go."

Before the February 2012 shooting, Zimmerman had made about a half dozen calls to a nonemergency police number to report suspicious characters in his neighborhood. Judge Debra Nelson on Wednesday ruled that they could be played for jurors.

Prosecutors had argued that the police dispatch calls were central to their case that Zimmerman committed second-degree murder since they showed his state of mind. He was increasingly frustrated with repeated burglaries and had reached a breaking point the night he shot the unarmed teenager, prosecutors say.

Defense attorneys argued that the calls were irrelevant and that nothing matters but the seven or eight minutes before Zimmerman fired the deadly shot into Martin's chest.

Seven of the nine jurors and alternates scribbled attentively on their notepads as the calls were played.

Uloop: Can Greek Life Ease the Transition Into College?

The transition into college can often be a challenging one; students sometimes struggle to find a place for themselves at their new home. Luckily for some, pledging a fraternity or sorority can ease that transition.

"When I thought of the friends I had made in college thus far, I knew I wasn't as happy as I could be. I decided to rush because I wanted to find an infallible support system of girls who shared common interests with me," said Sarah Collins, a freshman at Syracuse University.

Collins admits to having early reservations about joining a sorority, but she now acknowledges the benefits of being a sister of Kappa Alpha Theta, Chi Chapter.

"I can see just how much rushing has helped me transition into the college lifestyle. Theta has brought a wide range of personalities together and provided us life-long friendship as well as given us the strength to be active members of society," Collins said.

Not everyone can get involved in Greek life on campus right away. At the University of Maryland, sororities require students to have 12 credits and a minimum GPA of 2.5 to rush, and formal rush is held during the spring semester only. As a result, many girls, like freshman Kayla Yerkes, wait to rush.

Yerkes, now a sister of Alpha Xi Delta, Beta Eta chapter, nonetheless admits that waiting to go through the formal process in the spring had its benefits. "I'm glad I did formal rush because I got to see sororities I would have overlooked had I not been forced to see them all," she said.

Jake Wegbreit, a freshman at the University of Rochester, also waited until his second semester to get involved in Greek life on campus. He learned about his fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, Rho Nu chapter through friends he met at Hillel.

"Right after winter break, I was at Hillel and there were three brothers talking to me about how great it was and how happy being in AEPi has made all of them. They told me how they have gotten so much out of being part of AEPi. That was the deciding factor so I went through rush and I pledged," Wegbreit said.

Other students wait to rush until even later in their college career. Kat Cook, a sophomore at the University of Maryland, pledged Alpha Chi Omega, Gamma Theta chapter just this past semester.

"As a freshman I had a solid group of friends and didn't feel like I needed it to have a fun social life, but then sophomore year I decided wanted to get involved," Cook said.

Despite different rushing experiences, students across various campuses have found it to be a rewarding experience.

"Brotherhood is indescribable. All I know is that I love it. I love how there will always be someone that wants to hang out at almost anytime," Wegbreit said about his fraternity.

Tyler Varian, a freshman at George Washington University, spoke similarly about his experience as a brother of Zeta Beta Tau, Phi Alpha Alpha chapter.

"Being part of a fraternity has allowed me to expand my social network and has enhanced my college experience as a whole," said Varian. "Being a brother in ZBT has helped define who I am as a person and has allowed me to seamlessly transition from high school to university."

Additionally, Greek life provides an opportunity for students to get involved in a far more extensive way than other extracurricular activities on campus allow.

"We, as an entirety, strive to make noticeable differences in our local and global communities," said Collins about her experience in Kappa Alpha Theta, and also the Greek community as a whole. ?"Being involved on a campus expanded my connections and allowed me to meet so many goal-oriented and caring people," she said.

Greek life may not be for everyone, but for those who do choose to pledge in their college career can find their niche in college as soon as their first semester, easing the move to college.

Said Collins: "Greek life is the perfect combination of sisterhood, service opportunity and social expansion to create a smooth transition into college."

Two mutations triggered an evolutionary leap 500 million years ago

June 24, 2013 ? Evolution, it seems, sometimes jumps instead of crawls. A research team led by a University of Chicago scientist has discovered two key mutations that sparked a hormonal revolution 500 million years ago.

In a feat of "molecular time travel," the researchers resurrected and analyzed the functions of the ancestors of genes that play key roles in modern human reproduction, development, immunity and cancer. By re-creating the same DNA changes that occurred during those genes' ancient history, the team showed that two mutations set the stage for hormones like estrogen, testosterone and cortisol to take on their crucial present-day roles.

"Changes in just two letters of the genetic code in our deep evolutionary past caused a massive shift in the function of one protein and set in motion the evolution of our present-day hormonal and reproductive systems," said Joe Thornton, PhD, professor of human genetics and ecology & evolution at the University of Chicago, who led the study.

"If those two mutations had not happened, our bodies today would have to use different mechanisms to regulate pregnancy, libido, the response to stress, kidney function, inflammation, and the development of male and female characteristics at puberty," Thornton said.

The findings were published online June 24 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Understanding how the genetic code of a protein determines its functions would allow biochemists to better design drugs and predict the effects of mutations on disease. Thornton said the discovery shows how evolutionary analysis of proteins' histories can advance this goal, Before the group's work, it was not previously known how the various steroid receptors in modern species distinguish estrogens from other hormones.

The team, which included researchers from the University of Oregon, Emory University and the Scripps Research Institute, studied the evolution of a family of proteins called steroid hormone receptors, which mediate the effects of hormones on reproduction, development and physiology. Without receptor proteins, these hormones cannot affect the body's cells.

Thornton's group traced how the ancestor of the entire receptor family -- which recognized only estrogens -- evolved into descendant proteins capable of recognizing other steroid hormones, such as testosterone, progesterone and the stress hormone cortisol.

To do so, the group used a gene "resurrection" strategy. They first inferred the genetic sequences of ancient receptor proteins, using computational methods to work their way back up the tree of life from a database of hundreds of present-day receptor sequences. They then biochemically synthesized these ancient DNA sequences and used molecular assays to determine the receptors' sensitivity to various hormones.

Thornton's team narrowed down the time range during which the capacity to recognize non-estrogen steroids evolved, to a period about 500 million years ago, before the dawn of vertebrate animals on Earth. They then identified the most important mutations that occurred during that interval by introducing them into the reconstructed ancestral proteins. By measuring how the mutations affected the receptor's structure and function, the team could re-create ancient molecular evolution in the laboratory.

They found that just two changes in the ancient receptor's gene sequence caused a 70,000-fold shift in preference away from estrogens toward other steroid hormones. The researchers also used biophysical techniques to identify the precise atomic-level mechanisms by which the mutations affected the protein's functions. Although only a few atoms in the protein were changed, this radically rewired the network of interactions between the receptor and the hormone, leading to a massive change in function.

"Our findings show that new molecular functions can evolve by sudden large leaps due to a few tiny changes in the genetic code," Thornton said. He pointed out that, along with the two key changes in the receptor, additional mutations, the precise effects of which are not yet known, were necessary for the full effects of hormone signaling on the body to evolve.

Obama says carbon limits needed for power plants

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says carbon pollution limits need to be set on U.S. power plants in order to curb global warming.

Obama says rules are already in place to limit pollution from arsenic, mercury, lead and other substances, but no federal limits exist on how much carbon pollution that power plants ? including many that are fired by coal ? can dump into the air.

Obama says "that's not right, it's not fair, and it needs to stop."

Obama made his remarks Tuesday in a speech at Georgetown University, where he announced measures he intends to take to limit pollution that is trapping gases in the atmosphere.

South Africa: Mandela still in critical condition

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South Africa's president says Nelson Mandela remains in the hospital in critical condition.

President Jacob Zuma said Monday that doctors are doing everything possible to ensure the 94-year-old's wellbeing and comfort on his 17th day in a hospital in the capital, Pretoria.

President Zuma visited the anti-apartheid leader at a hospital Sunday evening and was informed by the medical team that Mandela's condition had become critical in the past 24 hours.

Mandela, who became South Africa's first black president after the end of apartheid in 1994, was hospitalized on June 8 for what the government said was a recurring lung infection. This is his fourth hospitalization since December.

Mad Catz R.A.T. M

Gaming mice are usually complicated affairs, and wireless gaming mice tend to be even more involved. Besides a cable, high-end gaming mice usually have a charging cradle and are designed to sit quietly on a desk when not in use. This is great if you have a desktop gaming system, but if you like traveling around with a gaming notebook, it feels a bit bulky. Mad Catz's mobile gaming mice offer an alternative. The R.A.T. M is a particularly small, portable gaming mouse with all of the extra buttons and laser sensor resolution (6,400 dpi) you could want, but at $129.99 (direct) it's very pricey and it's just a little too small to be comfortable, especially compared to the you-won't-notice-it's-much-bigger-in-your-bag M.O.U.S. 9, which costs the same and will cause less cramps for larger hands.

Design
The R.A.T. M feels like a more compact version of Madcatz' other R.A.T. mice, and is dwarfed even by the M.O.U.S. 9, a similar MadCatz wireless mouse. The mouse takes Mad Catz' distinctive shape, with an angular, futuristic profile punctuated by a large thumb rest, an index finger button located to the left of the regular left mouse button, and a prominent, ridged metal wheel. Besides the additional index finger button, the mouse has two thumb buttons and a four-way directional nub on the thumb rest, plus a switch located just under the mouse wheel that toggles between high and low sensitivity.

Under the R.A.T. M, a small USB receiver sits in a spring-loaded hole, so you don't have to worry about losing it when the mouse isn't in use. A small switch under the optical sensor turns the mouse on and off. A battery compartment sits under the palm rest and holds two AAA batteries. The mouse comes with a drawstring pouch made of a black mesh material, for keeping the mouse safe when traveling.

Comfort
While it's small, the palm rest can extend slightly to fit larger hands. Unfortunately, even with the palm rest completely extended, the mouse is too small to use comfortably under my large hand. With my fingers placed on the mouse buttons, the rest barely reaches the upper part of my palm, and the heel of my hand gets no support at all. It really feels like a mini-mouse. Everything feels smaller than the R.A.T. 9 or M.O.U.S. 9, and for my Herculean mitts that means wrist cramping after extended use. If you have smaller hands, the R.A.T. M might be a refreshing change of pace and a much more comfortable mouse, but for me it just felt far too tiny. Adding insult to injury, the palm rest has no locking mechanism, so it tends to push back into the mouse when in use.

The R.A.T. M measures less than 4.3 inches long with the palm rest fully extended, shorter than most gaming mice. For reference, the Corsair Vengeance M65 measures 4.7 inches in length, the Logitech Touch Mouse T620 measures 4.4 inches in length, a house mouse (mus musclus) can grow up to 3.9 inches in length not including tail, and a brown rat (rattus norveigus) can reach up to 10 inches in length not including tail. Incidentally, rattus norveigus make surprisingly good, intelligent pets.

Despite the size, the R.A.T. M feels responsive, like other mice in Mad Catz' catalog. It uses a 6,400 dots-per-inch laser sensor to track movement, and I had no problem with precision when playing games connected to a notebook.

The Mad Catz R.A.T. M packs some great design elements and a very good laser sensor into a tiny, pocketable gaming mouse you can take with you on the go. However, its small size can be a hindrance for gamers with large hands, and its $130 price tag is pretty intimidating for what you get. The small size doesn't quite justify the premium you pay, especially when the excellent Logitech G700s?is available for $30 less. If you're unwilling to compromise on the buttons and sensitivity of a gaming mouse, there's no reason to compromise on the size of the mouse and how it feels in the hand. If you just want a functional wireless mouse, the Logitech Touch Mouse?is available for half the price of the R.A.T. M, and the Mad Catz M.O.U.S. 9 offers a larger, more comfortable fit (while still built for portability) than the R.A.T. M.?

Leap Motion starts expanded beta, opens dev portal to the public, shows off Airspace app store handson

Slowly but surely Leap Motion is making its way toward a commercial release. Today, the company has announced it's moving into the next phase of beta testing and that it will be opening up its developer portal to the public later in the week. While this still won't get folks a Leap device any faster, it will let them dig into Leap's tools and code base in preparation for when they finally get one. The move marks a shift from the company's previous SDK-focused beta to a consumer-focused one that'll serve to refine the UX in Windows and OSX. Within each operating system, there will be two levels of Leap control: basic, which essentially allows you to use Leap in place of a touchscreen, and advanced to allow for more 3D controls enabled by Leap's ability to detect the pitch and yaw of hands in space.

CEO Michael Buckwald gave us this good news himself, and also gave us a preview of Airspace, Leap's app store, and a few app demos for good measure. As it turns out, Airspace is a two-pronged affair -- Airspace Store is showcase for all software utilizing the Leap API and Airspace Home is a launcher that keeps all the Leap apps that you own in one convenient place. There will be 50 apps in Airspace at the start of the beta, with offerings from pro tools and utility apps to casual games, and we got to see a few examples.

How To Find The Right Teacher In Martial Arts | Content for Reprint

Author: Andrew Toth | Total views: 51 Comments: 0
Word Count: 1050 Date:

It goes without saying that not all teachers (of any subject) are equal and that is probably multiplied to the nth degree in the martial arts which doesn't allow for standardization to quite the same degree as other subjects might. There are of course ongoing attempts at standardization and classification but the martial arts are still very much of a melting pot and one is often left wondering who is teaching what and where did it come from.

Enter the beginner?

Given this prodigious output of styles and teachers, how is a beginner, who knows virtually nothing about the martial arts?how is such a person to find the right teacher?

And is that the right question?

Maybe there is no "right" teacher. Maybe the right teacher for me is not the right teacher for you.

So it can get a bit complicated?

But I'm getting ahead of myself here. Questions such as these simply do not arise for most people. They join their neighborhood club, pay their fees, get graded a few times, get a nice colored belt maybe even a trophy or two, tell their friends they are a brown belt in such and such a style and?that is all they want. And I'm not here to argue with that, but?

If you're real serious, if martial arts is your reason for living, you will need to find the Right Teacher and that means that you will have to do some serious searching. Both internally and externally.

Why?

Because the Right Teacher will not appear miraculously on the horizon when you first decide to be the next Bruce Lee. And so, almost by default, beginners tends to think of their first teacher as THE RIGHT TEACHER! Which is understandable because they don't know any better. They have nothing to compare their first teacher to, so the first teacher is THE BEST. The beginner is totally convinced of that.

However, as time moves on the beginner may begin to experience some disquiet. Some things don't add up. The first teacher may be a bit overweight, or not as fit as he could be. Maybe he doesn't answer questions satisfactorily?but hey! nobody's perfect and all things considered the first teacher is still The Best, and that's all there is to it, right? Nonetheless there is talk...there is talk of another teacher down the road who is (blasphemy!) even better. The beginner puts all those preposterous notions aside of course, but...

There are now some cracks in the facade.

Not fatal, but it is through these cracks that the doubts seep in.

That, at least, is what happened to me. I was absolutely convinced that my first teacher was the best, but?I checked out the new teacher down the road (no harm in that, is there?). Then I joined up and started the cycle all over again. And then again and again and again?

I tried judo, ju-jutsu, Hsing-i, Pa-kua, Tai chi, Shaolin and a number of other styles the names of which I now forget. Nothing changed. The teachers were all promising to begin with and, truth be told, they were all quite capable in their own way and I learned a lot from each and every one of them but they were only technicians. They knew the techniques, and that is all they knew. And I wanted more, so I moved on. Just what I wanted I was still not sure of?

An astute reader will now see the obvious. One's Search, one's Quest, is part of one's over-all Training. A very important part. Why?

Because it is all part of a learning curve. You are learning not only new techniques but you are learning something infinitely more important: the Art of Discernment! The Art of separating the wheat from the chaff. The Art of separating the Real from the False?

And yes, it is also the Art of recognizing the Real Teacher when he or she finally appears.

You see, that is the secret. Finding the right teacher is only the half of it. Recognizing them to be such is by far the more difficult and important half.

Let me ask you a question: how often does a student find the right teacher and continue to walk on by and not know the difference?

It happens more often than you might think! I've seen it again and again and again!

The thing to bear in mind is that the Right Teacher may not be (and usually isn't) the Hollywood stereotype. The Right Teacher may be an unassuming little fellow who runs a little corner store, is disarmingly self-effacing and has maybe one or two students who are equally unimpressive. In short this is not really the sort of person who matches your mental image of a deadly warrior. Or he may be crude and rude and obnoxious. And (blasphemy again!) he may not have your best interests at heart!

In other words, not all Masters fit the Hollywood mold! You really do have to keep your wits about you on this because the Right Teacher will confound your expectations nearly every time!

The "secret" then is to keep training, keep looking and to develop the Power of Discernment so that you can see below superficial appearances. (This will stand you in good stead not only in your search for a teacher and but also when you are in a fight!)

There is a saying that when the student is ready, the Teacher will appear. And that will happen when the student has developed a keen sense of discernment.*

*Author's note: by discernment I do not mean cynicism. The "been there, done that" attitude will not help you find a Teacher and if perchance you do, that Teacher will not be interested in teaching you. Real discernment has a quality of humility: you don't know the answer, you don't even know if there is an answer, but you will not stop searching.

Andrew Toth is the author of the book, Shaolin Temple Kung Fu, which is arguably the most advanced book available on the subject of martial arts. It is a must for anyone who is serious about this subject. You can read it HERE
