Unification Church plans to move founder Moon to its own hospital after his condition worsens

SEOUL, South Korea - The Rev. Sun Myung Moon's condition has worsened and the Unification Church will move its founder to a church-owned hospital near his home, officials said Friday.

The church said it is also bringing in a specialist from Japan to try to treat Moon's pneumonia and increase his chances of recovery.

Moon, 92, is a self-proclaimed messiah whose church runs a worldwide multibillion-dollar religious and business empire that includes The Washington Times newspaper, the New Yorker Hotel in Manhattan, Bridgeport University in Connecticut and hospitals in South Korea and Japan.

A respiratory specialist was traveling to South Korea from the church hospital in Japan, and Moon was to be moved Friday to Cheongshim Hospital in the town of Gapyeong, northeast of Seoul, church spokesman Ahn Ho-yeol said. Doctors in Seoul told the church they cannot cure Moon.

Moon has developed new complications since being hospitalized for pneumonia at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital earlier this month, church officials said. The complications involve Moon's kidneys and liver, but officials didn't elaborate further.

"Our prayers will hopefully work better in Gapyeong," Ahn said.

To help treat Moon, Cheongshim will receive whatever intensive care equipment it doesn't have from Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, Ahn said.

Moon's church and its mass weddings gained fame around the world after the church's foundation in 1954. Moon claims he was 15 when Jesus Christ personally called on him to complete his unfinished work.

Moon's last major public appearance was last month when he took part in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Peace Cup soccer tournament sponsored by his church in South Korea.

China's Wen says global crisis worsening

BEIJING (AP) ? Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday that the impact of the global economic crisis is worsening, and called during a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel for closer cooperation to revive growth.

Merkel was in Beijing for talks with Wen and other Chinese leaders aimed at expanding trade and allaying fears about Europe's debt problems. The visit comes as global growth slows and China struggles to reverse its deepest economic slump since the 2008 crisis.

Wen said he had increased confidence in the eurozone after being briefed by Merkel but expressed concern about European debt and said Italy, Greece and Spain must increase their determination to reform.

"The impact of the global financial crisis and the European sovereign debt crisis on the world is continuously deepening," Wen said during a meeting with Merkel.

"As important economies and strategic partners, China and Germany should make consistent efforts on promoting the confidence of the international community, joining together in dealing with challenges and creating a better tomorrow."

Later, Wen told reporters: "Recently, the European debt crisis has continued to worsen, giving rise to serious concerns in the international community. Frankly speaking, I am also worried."

Wen and Merkel presided at a signing ceremony for billions of dollars in business deals ? a regular event during visits by European leaders.

Airbus Industrie committed to invest $1.6 billion in the second phase of an aircraft final assembly plant opened in 2008 in Tianjin, Wen's hometown. A Chinese state company signed an agreement to purchase 50 Airbus jetliners valued at $3.5 billion.

Volkswagen AG, Europe's biggest automaker, signed a deal to invest $219 million in an "environmentally friendly production facility" and vocational training initiative, also in Tianjin.

Officials of the two governments also signed agreements to collaborate in biotechnology, electric vehicles, agriculture, education, labor and the environment.

A round of regular Chinese-German meetings was scheduled for next year, but German officials say Wen asked Merkel to come early before the Communist Party begins a once-a-decade handover of power to younger leaders in October.

Merkel's two-day visit includes meetings with Xi Jinping, who is due to become party leader and president, and Li Keqiang, in line to become premier.

The German leader was accompanied by a 20-member delegation of executives from German companies in the auto, chemicals, energy, commodities and other industries.

The meetings come amid tension over a request by European manufacturers of solar power equipment for anti-dumping duties on Chinese products they say are improperly subsidized. Chinese manufacturers that depend on the European market have warned Beijing might retaliate.

Germany is China's biggest European trading partner and one of the few developed economies with which it runs a trade deficit, due to large imports of German factory equipment and industrial components. Beijing reported a $16.3 billion trade deficit with Germany last year and $13 billion for the first seven months of this year.

German officials told reporters in Berlin that Merkel wants to assure Beijing that European debt is a "safe and good investment."

The visit focuses mostly on economic issues, but a senior German official told reporters he expects an "open discussion" with Chinese leaders on Syria, which is in the throes of a civil war that has left an estimated 20,000 people dead. Russia and China have repeatedly used their veto power in the U.N. Security Council to block strong Western- and Arab-backed action against President Bashar Assad's regime that could have led to sanctions.

Germany hopes a Security Council agreement on humanitarian issues could help provide a basis for a stronger agreement on political questions, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

NLP Life Coaching Tips for Better Time Management

Have you ever felt that time seems to fly by? Or else, move along at snail?s place?

Do you sometimes find yourself you overworked with so much to do and not enough time, at others you?re bored to tears and feeling the tick of every second.

If yes, it?s probably thanks to lack of time management!

Honestly, you are among the many, who wish there were 48 hours in the day because 24 hours always seem too little. If you were to practice NLP though, you?d find our current earth day just perfect!

What Kind Of Time Manager Are You?

The NLP approach to time management is that there are primarily two kinds of people those who operate ?in-time? and those who operate ?through-time?.

Those who operate in-time are usually unaware of the passage of time, they live in the moment and have no concern for following a timeline.

A good-example of being in-time would be going from one website link to another without paying heed to any nature of time constraints.

Those who operate through-time are very conscious of the passage of time and thus indulge in some amount of planning.

An example of this would be a person choosing to spend the next free half-hour, browsing through his favorite social networking site before dinner.

People belonging to either category could lack the ability to manage time well. However, through-timers are usually able to streamline their activities and manage time well, by using some simple techniques.

It is the in-timers who need more innovative means of managing time.

NLP Life Coaching Tips For Better Time Management

The first is activating the attitude of self-reflection where you think about your thought-process; by doing this you?ll soon be able to transform your thinking from ?I can, but?? to ?I should?, to ?I must?, to ?I will?.

The second technique is developing a motivational mechanism so that you are constantly inspired to perform the required tasks in hope of some returns.

While many people do think about such motivating factors, more often than not, they lose sight of them whenever tired or distracted. NLP tools help create a stronger foundation for keeping motivation alive.

NLP also teaches one to be single-minded and firm in any action such that distractions and time-wasters remain at bay.

Many people have, in fact, found NLP to be extremely effective in addressing their time management issues.

If you feel you too need help in that regard, you should consider taking up an NLP life coaching program focused on improving time management capabilities.

John Rich Blasts Clay Aiken RNC Tweet as "Racist"

John Rich and Clay Aiken missed each other on Celebrity Apprentice, with the country singer taking the title one season and the former American Idol finalist finishing second a year later.

And that's too bad because we can only imagine what fireworks may have exploded if these artists had actually done battle on national television.

Clay Aiken on the Red CarpetJohn Rich Pic

While watching last night's Republican National Convention in Tampa, Aiken Tweeted: "Playing drinking game with my brother now. We drink every time we see a black person on screen at the RNC convention #soberasamormon."

The slam didn't sit well with Rich, who quickly responded by calling out the singer on Twitter: "You should be ashamed for racist comments like THAT!WOW... Clay, you're better than that...I hope."

Rich then referred to Aiken's charity - the National Inclusion Project, which helps kids with disabilities enjoy the same recreational opportunities as everyone else - and added:

"@clayaiken hashtags soberasamormon? I thought your charity was for inclusion, not EXCLUSION. What happened?... I've just had enough of this racist nonsense. It's sick. PLS STOP."

Aiken's reply took Rich and the Republicans to task: "My charity is. Why isn't your party? ;-) @johnrich."

As far as Twitter feuds go, this one actually comes across as somewhat respectable at least. No curse words, mostly decent grammar, even a smiley face emoticon.

Still, both men do raise real issues. Watch Ann Romney's RNC speech from last night now and decide: Which side are you on?

Ryan's role: Defending Romney and slamming Obama

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? With a no-nonsense tone, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan embraced his role as Barack Obama's top agitator ? and Mitt Romney's chief defender

Stubbornly high unemployment? Obama's fault. Dispirited Americans? Obama's fault. Even the General Motors plant in his beloved hometown of Janesville, Wis. You can guess who's fault that is, too.

"Without a change in leadership, why would the next four years be any different from the last four years?" Ryan said.

The Wisconsin congressman stepped onto the national stage Wednesday night with a Midwesterner's polite but pointed outrage for a nation whose economy has not recovered from the Great Recession quickly enough. Citing statistics, Ryan comfortably slid into the traditional role of the No. 2 on a presidential ticket.

From the outset of the speech ? his highest stakes appearance yet in his political career ? he took Obama to task. He gave the Republican faithful and Obama skeptics plenty of reminders that some of Obama's promises of 2008 have come up short.

"It all started off with stirring speeches, Greek columns, the thrill of something new," Ryan said. "Now all that's left is a presidency adrift, surviving on slogans that already seem tired, grasping at a moment that has already passed, like a ship trying to sail on yesterday's wind."

He offered praise for Romney and a brief introduction to his story growing up in Wisconsin. But the thrust of Ryan's pitch is that Obama has failed and it is time to replace him with Romney.

FILE - In this Jan. 24, 2002 file photo, with his head shaven and his stare fixed straight, American Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh leaves the Alexandria Detention Center in Alexandria, Va., before dawn, on the way to his first appearance in a nearby federal court. Lindh is expected to testify Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, in Indianapolis during the first day of the trial over prayer policies in a tightly restricted prison unit where he and other high-risk inmates have severely limited contact with the outside world. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File)

(AP) ? A judge is now considering whether the rights of American-born Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh are being violated because daily group prayers are banned at the Indiana prison where he's being held.

The government rested its case Thursday after a four-day trial in Indianapolis in Lindh's lawsuit. Lindh says the ban violates Muslim inmates' religious rights.

U.S. District Judge Jane Magnus Stinson didn't immediately rule, but gave both sides 75 days to submit final documents in the case.

Lindh says the prison policy violates a 1993 law that bars the government from curtailing religious expression without a compelling interest.

The government says the restrictions are necessary for security and religious fairness. The prison allows weekly religious gatherings.

Lindh pleaded guilty in 2002 to aiding the former Taliban government in Afghanistan.

'Big Lebowski's' real-life Dude still abides

By Courtney Garcia, NBC News contributor

Fans of the 1998 film ?The Big Lebowski? will never forget Jeff Bridges'?classic performance as The Dude, an unemployed slacker living in Los Angeles. But they may be surprised to find out the Dude was based on a real dude.

The inspiration for?the film's lead came from?Los Angeleno Jeff Dowd, who?still lives his laid-back lifestyle despite the movie's popularity. He's now the subject of a short documentary (called, naturally, "The Dude"). Filmmaker?Jeff Feuerzeig reveals Dowd?s younger years as an anti-war activist and?also tracks his post-Lebowski life, as Dowd travels around the country speaking to fans.

?("Lebowski") has made me somewhat of an icon,? Dowd acknowledges while signing autographs for Dude impersonators?at the Tampa Bay Lebowski Fest.

Despite his fame, it appears not too much else has changed in Dowd?s day-to-day living. The movie cuts from scenes of him downing a carton of half & half in the grocery store (as famously depicted in?"Lebowski")?to?loafing around his apartment, disheveled?and clad in?boxers.

Perhaps most surprising is the footage of Dowd?s?younger years. After fighting the government and resisting the draft in the Vietnam War, he spent a year in jail, then went on to?market independent films.?Dowd?met Robert Redford in the early days of the actor's Sundance Film Festival, and connected with?"Lebowski" directors Joel and Ethan?Coen in 1984.

From there, The Dude became a legend.

?They just loved riffing on the name,? Dowd recalls of the Coens? fascination. ?We spent so much time together that they just started to pick up on some of my weird character traits and body language, which informed a lot of the (movie) character.?

Feuerzeig met Dowd in 1986 to discuss a script of his own, and never forgot the experience.

?I flew from NY to LA, rented a car, and pulled up to The Dude's dilapidated apartment/office on the "boardwalk" of Venice Beach,? he?writes on his Vimeo page. ?As if on cue, this Avery Schreiber-looking mop-topped behemoth clad in super-tight grape smuggling polyester shorts and a hideous floral Hawaiian shirt rolled up on roller blades and welcomed me to paradise.

"While I stood on his sagging balcony overlooking the Pacific Ocean watching all the blonde bikini-clad beach girls in leg warmers skate by, the Dude ransacked his living room, overturning stacks of unread scripts, looking for my screenplay, which I'm still not convinced he'd read.?

But as the movie shows, The Dude still abides.

Are you a "Lebowski" fan? Tell us on Facebook.

How Ann Romney learned to stop worrying and love politics

Ann and Mitt Romney in a visit to Poland, Warsaw in July. (Carsten Koall/Getty Images)

TAMPA--When the three major news networks announced last week that they would not air Ann Romney's Republican National Convention Monday night speech in Tampa, Republicans started scrambling. Romney's likeable wife of 43 years needed a primetime spot, they decided, and party leaders were reportedly ready to bump the popular Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to make that happen. Eventually, they moved New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez's appearance to another night so that Ann could steal the spotlight on Tuesday. Meanwhile, party officials denied they had ever considered dumping Rubio.

This last minute jockeying is a testament to just how vital the campaign considers Ann to her husband's election efforts, something that wasn't always the case over the course of Romney's political career. Back in 1994, during Romney's failed U.S. Senate bid (and first run for office), the new political spouse on the block was a gaffe-prone potential liability without the polish or PR skills to handle the press. But over the years, Ann has learned how to spin family tales into political catnip--wooing voters by offering a dimension to her husband that no one else has seen before?and becoming a smooth and competent politician in her own right.

The 63-year-old mother of five and grandmother to 18 has emerged as an important humanizing force for Romney on the campaign trail. While the presumptive Republican nominee can come across as stiff and awkward on the stump, Ann charms the crowd with personal stories, casting her husband in a softer light. At a rally in Michigan on Friday she choked up while expressing gratitude that so many supporters in her home state had shown up. "Mitt and I grew up here, we fell in love here, and this is a special place for us," she said.

Despite her ongoing struggle with multiple sclerosis, which she was diagnosed with in 1998, Ann has attended hundreds of campaign events and often comes across as having more energy on the stump than her husband. She was at her husband's side at virtually every rally during the long primary?working the rope line alongside her spouse and often delivering a mini stump speech of her own.

In one instance, she tells the story of being a stay-at-home mom in charge of five "very naughty" sons when her husband, then a consultant with Bain Capital, was traveling. "He would call home, and he'd hear a very exasperated wife at the end of the phone," Ann said during a rally in South Carolina in January. "And he'd remind me to hang in there. It would be okay, that actually my job was more important than his job. And the cool thing was he meant it."

"You couldn't pay me to do this again"

Ann now seems so skilled and smooth in interviews it's hard to believe that she is actually something of a comeback kid, politically speaking.

During her husband's unsuccessful bid for a Massachusetts Senate seat, the Boston Globe blasted her in a scorched-earth profile that portrayed her as a chatty, over-privileged woman living a life so perfect it bordered on creepy. The two lines from the interview that most haunted the campaign: Ann's insistence that she and her Ken-doll-looking husband had never once had a fight during their marriage; and her statement that the couple was "struggling" when Mitt was getting his graduate degrees at Harvard. The two were supporting themselves by selling off American Motors stock given to Mitt by his wealthy father?something that didn't exactly resonate with voters working two jobs to survive. ("Mitt was still in school and we had no income except the stock we were chipping away at. We were living on the edge, not entertaining. No, I did not work. Mitt thought it was important for me to stay home with the children, and I was delighted," she said at the time.)

In an article titled "Daughter of Privilege Knows Little of Real World," the Boston Herald ripped off the most unflattering of the Globe's quotes. The experience left Ann incredibly angry, she later admitted. When a reporter asked her after her husband's defeat whether she would ever help him launch another race, she retorted: "Never. You couldn't pay me to do this again."

Writer Ron Scott, a Mormon who wrote MITT ROMNEY: An Inside Look at the Man and His Politics and who lived in the same stake?sort of the Mormon version of a diocese?as the Romneys, said he remembers "gasping" when he first read the Globe profile, instantly recognizing it as a disaster. But now, Scott thinks the incident just shows how fully Romney trusted his wife?for good or for bad. Despite her political inexperience, her husband was willing to let Ann do an hour-long one-on-one interview without media training or a PR team to hold her hand. And Ann was happy to take that risk, confident she could come out on top.

Perhaps that assurance was misplaced at the time, but it seems fitting now.

"She looks...like she's enjoying the campaign," Scott said. "I think if you were to contrast between now and '94, I don't think she really enjoyed that campaign or the 2008 one, but this time around I think she really looks like she's come alive."

The happy homemaker

Romney often introduces Ann as his "sweetheart" on the trail. The two began dating when she was 16 and he 18 in the ritzy Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills. Ann's father, an immigrant from Wales, had made his fortune and served as the town's mayor. Romney, the son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, "hotly pursued" her, she said later. After a year at Stanford and two years of a Mormon mission in France, Romney rushed home and proposed to Ann, who had converted to Mormonism under Gov. Romney's tutelage and was attending Brigham Young University in Utah.

Ann eventually finished her undergraduate degree in French in 1975, when she already had two children. She recalled in an interview with People magazine that she shocked a professor at Harvard's extension school--where she took some classes at night while Mitt attended grad school--for needing to nurse one of her children in the back of the lecture hall. "It's one of those things where the professor is like, 'Wait, wait, wait, this is liberal Harvard, but what am I going to do about that woman in the back with a baby that's nursing?' He just kept pretending like I wasn't there," she recalled. Though she saw the Beatles perform live in Detroit and was a child of the 60s, Ann was a bit of rebel in reverse for wanting to settle down and have children instead of pursuing a career. She's said she felt judged sometimes by peers, but never regretted her decision.

During the campaign in April, she used a Democratic strategist's attack on her for never "working a day in her life" to portray Democrats as judgmental and dismissive of mothers, a powerful counterattack to the Democratic argument that Republicans were waging a "war on women." The comments sent Democrats into a tailspin, with no less than President Barack Obama himself going on TV to say, "There's no tougher job than being a mom" within a day of the comments. Ann later called the attack "an early birthday gift" in comments that were captured by a hot mic, inadvertently showing off her tough-as-nails political instincts.

Team Romney

When speaking about Romney's bid, Ann frequently uses the "we" or the "Mitt and I" construction, emphasizing just how invested in the campaign she actually is. She's not just selling Mitt on the stump--she's selling them both as a team.

"Mitt and I are in an unusual position right now to make a difference to the future of this nation," she told a rally in West Charleston, S.C., in January.

Then, two weeks ago, she said to NBC: "I don't think he could do it without me. I don't believe he could."

Her willingness to take on the mantle of surrogate is somewhat surprising for a woman who has often aired her misgivings about opening up her private life and whom the Boston Globe described as largely "invisible" in Massachusetts as first lady when her husband was governor. Even now, when traveling on her own, Ann rarely tells people she meets on planes her true identity; she prefers to say vaguely that she works in public relations.

Technically, she's not lying. During the primaries, when Romney had a tense relationship with his traveling press corps, Ann would venture back on the candidate's plane to chat with reporters?offering up a friendlier face to the pack of wolves press than her hunted husband.

After a disastrous event in South Carolina when Romney was photographed with one of the smallest crowds he's ever attracted on the trail, Ann wandered off the bus and stood with reporters awaiting a gaggle with the candidate.

"What kind of jeans are you wearing?" she jokingly shouted, as her husband took the mic?a reference to a brief media obsession over whether the candidate was sporting "skinny" jeans on the campaign trail. Her husband grinned.

On the campaign plane, Ann always shares a row with her husband. He reads his iPad, while she's been spotted flipping through issues of US Weekly. He has said her presence keeps him calm. "If I'm away from Ann for longer than a week or so, I get off course," Romney told CNN's Piers Morgan. "She has to bring me back and moderate me down a bit."

But Ann's sunny disposition has faltered as negative attacks on her family's wealth and character intensified over the summer. While she's continued to be one of her husband's strongest assets on the stage, Ann has largely ceased her plane-side chats with reporters trailing her husband across the country.

Advisers who declined to be named discussing the candidate's wife said Ann was deeply wounded by the British tabloid attacks in July over her husband's comments suggesting he found London's Olympic preparations "disconcerting." (The Sun tabloid called him "Mitt the Twit" in retaliation, and the gaffe threatened to overshadow Romney's foreign tour.)

More recently, her hackles have been up over demands that her husband release more years of his tax returns. Ann was noticeably agitated in an interview with NBC's Natalie Morales two weeks ago when asked about the financial disclosures.

"Have you seen how we are attacked? Have you seen what's happened?" she said, leaning forward in her chair. "We have been very transparent to what's legally required of us. But the more we release, the more we get attacked, the more we get questioned, the more we get pushed. And so we have done what's legally required, and there's going to be no more tax releases given."

Besides fighting back in interviews, Ann has grown more aggressive on the stump as well. The announcement of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc) as Romney's running mate has breathed new life into the campaign, drawing larger crowds to Romney's events. Joining her husband and Ryan on stage at a rally in Mooresville, N.C., earlier this month, she marveled at the size of the crowd that had turned out, which was estimated to be at least 4,000 people.

"They know America is in trouble and these are the guys who are going to save it," she said. "It's a boost that gives us determination to say we're not going to take it anymore! We're going to take the White House back!"

--Holly Bailey contributed to this report from the campaign trail.

Correction: An earlier version of this story said the Romneys have 16 grandchildren. They have 18.

SPIN METER: Debt clock has dual message

(AP) ? As Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus gaveled the party's convention to order Monday, he also set in motion a debt clock, a theatrical flourish designed to remind Americans just how rapidly the government's tide of red ink is mounting under President Barack Obama.

It may also be an unintended reminder that the GOP's presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, has yet to say in any detail what he would do about it.

The clock Priebus started on Monday is totaling debt the government accumulates during the convention.

A second debt clock, which started running earlier, displays the total national debt, which now stands at $15.9 trillion. Priebus vowed that on Romney's first day in office, the new president would "take immediate action to cut federal spending and bring the debt under control."

So far in the campaign, Romney has promised to cut income tax rates across the board, including for the wealthiest households. He says he would pay for the cuts by eliminating unspecified deductions, but many like the break for home mortgage interest are so popular that it is hard to see how he would keep the tax reductions from adding to the red ink.

He wants to boost Pentagon spending ? another move that would make the debt problem worse. He also promises to protect current Social Security and Medicare recipients from cuts.

Romney says he would reduce the deficit by capping federal spending ? now at 23.5 percent of U.S. economy ? at 20 percent by the end of his first term in January 2017. But to make that math work would require deeper cuts in federal programs than Congress is likely to go along with.

With defense spending off limits, such reductions could mean slashing health care for the poor and disabled and huge cuts to programs like homeland security, air traffic control, law enforcement, food inspection, national parks and highways. Throughout nearly a year of campaigning, Romney has avoided saying what he'd cut.

Struggling to cope, Turkey stops refugees on Syrian border

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey has begun temporarily holding thousands of Syrians on the Syrian side of the border as it struggles to cope with a growing wave of refugees.

At least 2,000 people fleeing violence in Syria were prevented from entering Turkey overnight at one of several unofficial border crossings in the southern province of Hatay, a Turkish official and witnesses said.

"We have run out of space to house these people. We are working to make shelters and when these are completed we will allow these people across," the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

He said the refugees were being handed food and humanitarian aid through the barbed-wire fence that marks much of Turkey's 900-km (560-mile) border with Syria, and through which tens of thousands of Syrians have scrambled over the past 17 months.

The official said he hoped the refugees would be allowed to cross later on Sunday.

The number of Syrian refugees in Turkey has nearly doubled over the past two months to more than 80,000 and Ankara has already said it is struggling to cope.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said this week Turkey could run out of space if the number went above 100,000 and suggested the United Nations may need to create a "safe zone" inside Syria.

In total, more than 200,000 Syrians have poured into neighboring countries since the start of the conflict, already surpassing a U.N. year-end estimate of 185,000, and Turkey, which has seen the highest refugee influx, is growing frustrated at what it sees as a slow international response.

"The United Nations and others are commending Turkey and neighboring countries for doing a good job housing the refugees but all these comments are actually covering up a crisis," a second Turkish official told Reuters.

STRUGGLING TO COPE

"Our capabilities as a host country are being strained ... we are now struggling to cope," said the official, who declined to be named so he could speak freely on the subject.

He said while several countries had provided some humanitarian aid such as blankets and tents, the overall response had been slow. He said despite pledges being made, Turkey had so far not received any financial assistance.

Many of the latest arrivals have been housed in schools and sports centers but, with the academic term due to begin in a matter of weeks, this is not a permanent solution.

Turkey is rushing to build several new camps but refugees are arriving faster than they can be constructed. This has led to overcrowding, causing disturbances in some camps as tempers, exacerbated by blazing summer temperatures, flare over shortages of food and water.

Officials also say the real number of Syrians that have fled their homes over the past 17 months is higher than the official figures as thousands of wealthier refugees have arrived across official borders and are renting accommodation in cities.

Ankara fears a mass influx on the scale seen during the 1991 Gulf War when 500,000 people poured into Turkey, and says that would be one factor that could drive Turkey to establish a "buffer zone" inside Syria.

But Ankara is reluctant to act unilaterally on what would essentially amount to a military intervention.

The idea of a buffer zone has also gained little traction elsewhere and Ankara has been increasingly vocal in its frustration at the U.N. Security Council and its failure to come to a united stance over Syria.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said the Security Council's failure was indirectly supporting oppression in Syria, and criticized vetoes by China and Russia of U.N. resolutions as a "fiasco".

Car runs down NH memorial ride cyclists, killing 2

WESTMORELAND, N.H. (AP) ? Police say an 87-year-old driver crossed the center lane of traffic and struck a bevy of motorcyclists participating in a New Hampshire memorial ride, killing two of them. Six other people were hurt.

Police say as many as 200 motorcycles were riding on Route 12 on Saturday morning in Westmoreland when a car driven by Walpole resident Robert Lockerby swerved into their lane.

Killed were 59-year-old Gary Champney, of Alstead, and 41-year-old Aaron Robar, of Newport. Five other motorcyclists and Lockerby's 87-year-old wife were hurt. Two were airlifted to hospitals.

Police say neither speed nor alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.

The ride was in honor of Army Spc. Justin Rollins, a Newport native who was killed in Iraq by a roadside bomb in March 2007.

NASA again delays launch of probes

NASA postponed launching two spacecraft into the harsh radiation belts around Earth Friday due to an apparent malfunction with a tracking system that monitors the mission's rocket.

The tracking beacon glitch popped up before dawn on Friday, late in the mission's final countdown, prompting NASA to delay the launch of its twin ? Radiation Belt Storm Probes from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station by at least 24 hours. The unmanned Atlas 5 rocket carrying the two satellites is now slated to blast off at 4:07 a.m. EDT on Saturday.

NASA launch director Tim Dunn said the launch countdown was going well until his team spotted a frequency drift in the tracking beacon used by the Air Force's Eastern Range to track the Atlas 5 rocket after liftoff.

"That's a mandatory safety item so that we could track the vehicle in flight," Dunn said in a NASA broadcast after the delay. "It certainly was a situation we wish we didn't have, but we wanted to err on the side of conservatism." [ Photos: Inside NASA's Radiation Belt Mission ]

Dunn said Saturday and Sunday are still good days to launch the space radiation mission. There is a 60 percent chance of favorable weather for Saturday's launch attempt.

The $686 million Radiation Belt Storm Probes mission is a two-year project to study the radiation environment around Earth in unprecedented detail. The twin spacecraft are designed to fly in formation to explore the Van Allen Belts of radiation that encircle the Earth.

The Van Allen Belts are two doughnut-shaped zones of radiation around Earth. They were first discovered in 1958 by scientist James A. Van Allen and his team using data from the first American satellite Explorer 1. The first belt stretches from the top of Earth's atmosphere out to about 4,000 miles (6,437 kilometers) above the planet. The second radiation belt extends from about 8,000 miles (12,874 km) to more than 26,000 miles (41,842 km) above Earth.

Scientists hope the Radiation Belt Storm Probes mission will help them solve the mystery of how the radiation is created and behaves inside the Van Allen Belts, as well as the regions' role in space weather events? such as strong solar flares from the sun ? that can pose a danger to satellites and astronauts in orbit.

The two Radiation Belt Storm Probes are solar-powered and nearly identical. The octagon-shaped satellites are about 6 feet wide (1.8 meters) and just over 4 feet tall (1.3 m). They each carry a set of five instrument suites to study Earth's radiation belts.

When the two spacecraft launch this weekend is determined on the nature of today's tracking beacon problem, Dunn said. Launch team engineers are working to determine whether or not they will have to adjust hardware on the rocket itself, or only on its launch support structures, he said.

"We don't launch unless we're absolutely certain," Dunn added.

Merkel and Hollande unite in tough message for Greece

BERLIN (Reuters) - Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande presented a united front towards Greece on Thursday, telling Athens it should not expect leeway on its bailout agreement unless it sticks to tough reform targets.

The German and French leaders met in Berlin to fine-tune their message to Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who begins a charm offensive in Berlin and Paris this week in the hope of persuading Europe's big powers that Greece deserves patience.

Merkel stuck to her policy of deferring to a report due in September on Athens' progress by the "troika" of international lenders before discussing flexibility on the bailout terms, but said it was vital "that we all stay true to our commitments".

"But we will, and I will, encourage Greece to continue on its path to reform, which has demanded a lot of the Greek people," she told reporters before a dinner with Hollande set to be dominated by Greece.

"We want, I want, Greece to be in the euro zone, it's a desire we have expressed since the start of the crisis. It's up to the Greeks to make the effort that is essential for that goal to be met," said France's Socialist president, standing alongside Merkel.

German sources who attended the working dinner later told Reuters the two leaders had vowed to work "together and with resolve" to overcome the euro zone crisis and had also agreed that "credibility" was the key to rescuing Greece.

A source close to the French presidency said the two leaders had wanted to have a "straightforward" talk on a host of hot-button topics, from the euro zone to Syria.

Hollande plans to visit Spain on August 30 and Italy in early September, the source said. Both countries have seen their borrowing costs shoot up this summer amid market fears that the euro zone may start to unravel.

Samaras has given interviews to German media stressing that while Athens may seek more time to meet its fiscal targets, it is not asking for more money. But German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble and others seemed unconvinced.

"More time is not a solution to the problems," Schaeuble said, addressing Samaras' hopes that his country might be given four years instead of two to push through painful economic reforms, to alleviate the impact on the Greek people.

Schaeuble said more time could also mean "more money" and Europe's help for Greece had already "gone to the limits of what is economically viable".

From the sidelines, Dutch Finance Minister Jan Kees De Jager - a staunch ally of Berlin - urged Germany to "stick with its strict position" and giving Greece more time would not help.

European leaders say any decisions on Greece will depend on the report by inspectors from the "troika" - the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Samaras is seeking what he calls "a bit of air to breathe" at a moment of rare optimism on financial markets that the EU and ECB are poised for decisive action on the euro debt crisis.

Behind their stern public message, Berlin and Paris may have little choice but to show some flexibility, with little appetite in either capital for forcing Greece out of the euro zone.

AFTER MERKOZY

In talks that also touched on banking supervision in Europe and the role of the ECB, as well as civil war in Syria, Merkel and Hollande hoped to replicate the "Merkozy" alliance that gave the euro zone some semblance of unified leadership under Hollande's predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy.

The German sources described the atmosphere at Thursday's dinner as good.

The Franco-German axis has been strained by Hollande's calls for more measures to stimulate growth, a rebuff to Merkel's strict agenda of austerity. Some German officials say the relationship with Hollande is off to a rocky start.

As Merkel prepares to campaign for a third term in 2013, in a country where the media is taking an increasingly tough line with Greece, she cannot cede too much to Samaras - or to the French Socialist government, which is allied with her main domestic opponents, the Social Democrats.

With German patience wearing thin after repeated requests for financial help from Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland, Merkel is under pressure to defend taxpayers' interests while also upholding the stability of the currency.

Merkel will be watching Hollande's attempts to meet his own deficit targets with spending cuts and tax measures in the 2013 budget, German officials say.

"If Hollande gives up on his targets because of rising domestic political resistance, we can hardly expect more painful reforms from states like Italy or Spain," said one government source in Berlin, speaking on condition of anonymity.

There are signs that Merkel's conservatives, if not ready to postpone Greek reform targets, may also find ways to be flexible if the troika finds Athens is broadly in compliance.

"With Greece, we cannot change the cornerstones of the aid package or tamper with the principle of conditionality. But I can imagine we could adapt certain things within that framework such as interest rates or maturities on credit, like we already did with the first package," said Norbert Barthle, a member of parliament from Merkel's ruling centre-right coalition.

Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the Eurogroup of euro zone finance ministers, said Greece was staring at its "last chance" to avoid bankruptcy.
