Statue of Former Mayor Unveiled at Coca-Cola Field

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Many refer to it as the house that Grffiin built. Now, a bronze statue of Buffalo's fiesty former mayor stands outside the downtown baseball stadium he loved so much.

Family and friends of the late Mayor Jimmy Griffin gathered in front of the stadium this afternoon to see the unveiling.

The statue sits on One James D. Griffin Plaza, right in front of Coca-Cola Field.

Griffin played a pivotal role in getting what was then known as Pilot Field built in 1988. Today his son talked about the effect the stadium, which was built in retro style, has had on other cities

"After Pilot Field was opened back in 1988, cities across the country saw what could be done if people believed, and they began building their own field of dreams," said Tom Griffin. "What we started here in Buffalo has had a lasting impact here and in other minor league cities across the country."

Mayor Griffin passed away back in 2008.?He was a Bisons season ticket holder.

Along with his son Tom, his daughters Meghan and Maureen were on hand for today's unveiling.
