?No pain, no gain? is perhaps the most popular saying associated with working out ? but also wrong and potentially dangerous, Health.com reported Nov. 7.
?Pain is your body indicating that something is not right,? says psychologist and author Elizabeth Lombardo, Ph.D. ?Pushing through pain results in injury. In contrast, ?no train, no gain? is more accurate ? you need to train your body in order to make changes, and sometimes that includes working your body so you fatigue the muscles, but that is very different from pain.?
That?s not only the wrongheaded exercise mantra out there, experts say:
- You can feel sore tomorrow, or you can feel sorry tomorrow: It may be true in some sense, but it focuses on the negative rather than the positive benefits of exercise, says Lombardo.
- Want faster results? Simple. Work harder: ?Want faster results? Train smarter,? retorts the American College of Sports Medicine?s Pete McCall. ?Working harder is not necessarily going to produce change. Exercise is physical stress applied to the body; how (and how much) the stress is applied will determine the results.? In fact, your body actually builds muscle and gets stronger during recovery from exercise, so pushing yourself can be counterproductive.
- Pain is weakness leaving the body:??Pain is a signal that something is going wrong in the body and that whatever is happening at that moment to cause pain should stop,? says McCall.
- Earn your body: Too negative regarding the body you have now, experts say. ?It is important to appreciate your body in the here and now, and for all that it does for you,? says Lombardo. ?Part of that appreciation includes wanting it to be healthier. When we talk about exercise, the goal is to be grateful for all that your body does and want to improve it because you love it.?
